Born as a revolutionist amidst the industrial Quartz crisis, the birth of Swatch in 1983 galvanised the Swiss watchmaking industry, saving it from oblivion. What was initially thought to be a misstep quickly took the world by storm as legions sought to get hold of a Swatch watch. The formula to its success was simple and effective — Swatch created colourful and tongue-in-cheek watches powered by an ingenious movement comprising 51 components.

Despite the brand’s youthful and extroverted nature, Swatch’s founder Nicolas G. Hayek always maintained an innovative stance for the brand which has since gone on to develop its automatic SISTEM51 movement and most recently a sustainable bio-sourced plastic. Swatch was not one to rest on its laurels and continues to present the future of watchmaking biomaterials — BIOCERAMIC.

Swatch’s architecturally structured BIG BOLD is the collection of choice to take the plaudits for this next-generation material — dubbed the Swatch BIG BOLD BIOCERAMIC. The deep and wide case design allows wearers to fully appreciate the purity and refinement of BIOCERAMIC thanks to the signature Swatch see-through execution.

The new and unique environmentally-friendly BIOCERAMIC watch case is made from a mix of ceramic and bio-sourced plastic and offers the best properties of both materials — a resilient and resistant material with a silky-soft feel on the wrist.

Seeds and extracts of the castor plant — first used in September 2020 — continue to play a crucial role in the development and formulation of BIOCERAMIC. Ceramic powder and bio-sourced plastic granules are combined and extruded into homogeneous 2:1 composite ratio granules before injection-moulded into watch cases. Various pigments are added to obtain five distinct colours of the Swatch BIG BOLD BIOCERAMIC — black, white, grey, sky-blue and power-pink. Swatch’s biosourced plastic is used in the bracelet, glass and strap loops.
