Replay by Dru Chen Will Take You Back to 1999
For anybody who is a Gen Z-er, let us tell you a story. Once upon a time, in a decade far, far away, we used link cables to have our Pokémon teams tear into each other. We somehow convinced our parents to let us watch Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me and had an odd crush on both Keanu Reeves and Carrie Anne-Moss from The Matrix (no? just us?). Baby One More Time was the great cultural reset of the 1990s.

However, Replay by Dru Chen does not nod towards the 8-bit synth sounds that accompanied us on quiet nights. And neither is it a pop-punk-packaged-with-black-Converses-and-sex-bands kind of sound. It is an earnest and nostalgic look at love rediscovered and renewed.

“Music is no longer confined to genres or even decades. This is a love song for the ages, and it brings me back to my childhood just as it keeps me looking current and peering into the future. Jesse Bear blessed us with the seed of the composition, and Joel Tan a.k.a Gentle Bones shaped it with contribution from myself and Kathy Hinch into what it is today — a true pocket soul jam.”
