Denver Low of GudSht is Bottling Positivity in His Cocktails

Denver Low of GudSht Wants to Spread Joy With His Cocktails
We’re just six days away from the magical month of Christmas which means you’re going to be drinking a lot.
Instead of drinking like a frat boy or your 18-year old self, try something from Gudsht — handmade bottled cocktails guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

Hey, it’s Denver Low’s words. Not ours. We think it’s a pretty great solution.

Hi Denver, GudSht is a pretty ballsy name because you really do have to produce good s**t. Do you perhaps have a funny story behind the name?
We take a fun, whimsical approach to mixology and our cocktails, and we don’t take ourselves too seriously. We wanted to deliver a light-hearted approach to the otherwise serious business of mixology. As such, we strive to create cocktail concepts that are worthy of being called “good s**t” from both a conceptual as well as a taste profile perspective.

So we ended up with “GudSht” — a cheeky, all-in-the-name-of-fun moniker that also reflects our commitment to quality and a brand that delivers bottled happiness to our customers. That’s how the name came about. Remember: GudSht always comes to those who wait.

How did GudSht come about? What were you doing when you had that brain wave?
GudSht is, quite literally, a label born out of a pandemic. When COVID-19 struck, many of our crew at Elite Bar Solutions suddenly found themselves in limbo, as we had to stop running mobile bars and alcohol catering for corporate events and the like. It was then that GudSht was born, as it dawned upon us that creating GudSht would both help preserve the jobs of our bar staff in light of the pandemic that has impacted Singapore’s F&B industry severely, as well as help spread joy during the dark days of the Circuit Breaker. It allowed us to mitigate fixed costs while supporting and salvaging the livelihoods of the bar team and creating temporary jobs for the beverage industry.

The names and ingredients list for GudSht cocktails are pretty interesting, how would you convince a cocktail purist to try one?
We pride ourselves on being fun and approachable, and GudSht was created for the masses to enjoy, not just cocktail purists or connoisseurs. With that said, to the purists, we say, “Cocktails are about reinvention while paying homage to classics, that’s how great cocktails are developed and how classics came about, plus life is already so short, so why not?”

Can you take us through the development and R&D of three of your favourites from the GudSht range?
The development and R&D process behind all of our cocktails is the same — we get each of our resident bartenders to come up with a couple of recipes they deem worthy for each cocktail concept, and do several rounds of tasting to narrow it down to one variant for each cocktail.

So each of our cocktails available today had to go through minimally a couple rounds of tastings; some, such as the cocktails created as part of our various collabs like the two Mao Chas and local delights like Cheng Tng Gao & Pink Lemon Barley, went through additional layers of tasting by collaborators as well.

How about the cocktails for DHM? What is the story behind them?
The two cocktails for DHMm — Amalfi Plunge and Wandering Tomate — were curated to complement the restaurants’ setting. DHM’s restaurants — Riviera Forlino, L’Entrecôte The Steak & Fries Bistro, BTM Mussels & Bar, and Sabio by the Sea — vary in terms of concept and price point, but are all Mediterranean-inspired, and so were our cocktails. The ingredients were carefully thought through to complement certain dishes that are served at the restaurants. In fact, the names of both cocktails were coined jointly by DHM & us.

Come to think of it, what is the perfect cocktail to you?
Tough one, but it would be Deez Nuts. The chocolate-y notes and nuttiness of the cocktail is just what I like about it, as well as the bourbon which complements it well. The cheeky nature of its namesake helped to close the deal.

The ingredients used sound like potion ingredients, how do you go about sourcing for them?
Having been in the industry for over a decade, our team has developed a knack for finding even the most niche ingredients. We do our best to support as many local businesses as we can through these tough times by sourcing the freshest ingredients from a variety of local suppliers. Then, we let our resident bartenders work their magic and bring everything together to create these happy concoctions that our customers have come to love.

What’s next for GudSht?
GudSht will be working on additional, larger scale collaborations with local labels & also starting our first flagship bar. Stay tuned!
