#MFMF27: Editor-in-Chief Wilson’s Party Playlist

  • By Wilson Lim

I am not ashamed to admit that my favourite music genre is Electronic Dance Music (EDM), regardless of how “trashy” people might think it is. Growing up, I do enjoy a great deal of Pop but what I really dug was UK Garage — Mis-Teeq (before they went full-on Pop) and So Solid Crew. Then that genre died, so I moved on to Trance (which I’m still not fully sold on) and then House (which I still plug into every now and then) to finally landing on EDM.

I’m a beats-guy so there’s something in the lyrical pulsating beats that really work for me, even when I’m down. Yes people, there’s actually sad EDM songs and not all EDM songs are party tunes.

For this edition’s #MensFolioMusicFriday, I’m going to share some EDM songs that are on repeat for me right now.

—

MYRNE / Higher ft. Lost Boy

The first song goes to our own homeboy, MYRNE who is dishing out a track that does not pale in comparison to the international acts — groove and sick drops all check the right boxes for me.

—

Steve Aoki & Backstreet Boys / Let It Be Me

It has Backstreet Boys on the track, do I need to say more? Actually yes I do. To further correct the mindset that EDM is all about partying, watch the MV and you’ll see the social message behind this song — #loveforall.

Dyro / Free feat. Nigel Hay & Babet

This is a feel-good track, especially during those off-days when nothing in life is working out. The song gets you riled up from the get-go “Even when I’m losing / I survive, I survive / Even when I get down / I’ll rise, I’ll rise” and trust me with “Nothing’s gonna stop me now / Cause I’m free, baby /Feel it in my bones” banging into your skull, you’ll feel indestructible by the end of the song.

Jax Jones & Jess Glynne / One Touch

This is my emo anthem at the mo’ (don’t give me those weird judgemental eyes). “With just one touch (you’re always there to remind me) / You take me there (when water’s rough you will still be there) /Without your love (you’re always there right beside me) / We go nowhere /With just one touch” is the part I lip-sync, crave for a tender loving touch and proceed to tear while looking out the bus window.

To end this edition, I want to respond positively to the stereotype — I love dancing wildly at musical festivals.
