A Masterful Finish

  • By Khoo Yong Hao

The process of crafting an elegant timepiece is anything but half-hearted. From the cogs and gears within to the case holding the delicate movement, watchmakers pour their heart and soul into each and every one of their creations to ensure masterpieces of the highest calibre. In certain instances, they go above and beyond to grace their works with an extra wow factor, giving them intricate finishes through painstaking processes. To wear one of these watches is to stand behind those very processes, and appreciating every minute detail incorporated into those ornate finishes.

Casio G-Shock MR-G Tetsu-Tsuba

As a callback to its Japanese heritage, Casio made a new addition to its trusty MG-R line of watches in the form of the MR-G Tetsu-Tsuba. Translating to the “iron sword guard” of traditional crafted Japanese swords, the regal watch is a thing of oriental beauty. To ensure traditional accuracy, third-generation metalwork master artisan Asano Biho oversaw the production of the watches. The MRG-G2000HA’s unique colouration is also inspired by the aesthetic quality of murasaki-gane (deep violet metal) and suaka copper used in traditional Japanese craft traditions, adding another layer of historic background to the distinctive watch.

Zenith Defy Lab

Envelope-pushing materials are abound in the world of watchmaking, and the Zenith Defy Lab is a strong testament to that. Crafted in Aeronith – a hybrid material made of aluminium foam and a special polymer distinguished for its lightness (moreso than titanium, aluminium and carbon fibre) – the open-pore metal foam encasing the watch is also filled with an extremely light special polymer that is resistant to UV rays and anti-allergenic when in contact with sensitive skin, suited for any watch enthusiast.

Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Frosted Gold Limited Edition

For added bling, strap on the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Frosted Gold Limited Edition. Limited to a mere 200 pieces, the glamorous timepiece boasts an impressive 18-carat white gold case and bracelet – and that’s not even the best part. The Florentine finish found its way onto the coveted watch, a textured surface decoration on precious metal that has been perfected over the decades. Achieved by beating the gold with a diamond-tipped tool, it creates a sparkling effect similar to that of diamond dust. Moreover, Audemars Piguet’s craftsmen managed to incorporate this “roughing up” treatment without disrupting the clean lines of the venerable Royal Oak, proving once again that the Swiss Maison is truly a master of their craft.
