ECCO Celebrates Six Decades of Organic Tanned Leather Crafting

  • By Charmaine Tan

The Danish brand celebrates its 60th anniversary with the release of a dedicated collection alongside its newest Spring Summer 2023 line, and the opening of its seventh outlet in Singapore.

It has almost become commonplace for ECCO to be mentioned alongside words “shoes” and  “comfortable” with a reason that alludes most. If you’ve tried on a pair of shoes from the Danish brand, that is perhaps where you may find the conviction in such claims, but the reason for these reputable feats goes well beyond the reach of expert design and attention to detail.

Over the span of 60 years, ECCO’s repertoire has reached far beyond that of shoes, dipping toes into the pools of “artistry” and “sustainability” as the owner of the world’s first design-led tanneries. To put their accomplishments into better context, ECCO Leather, established in 1990 under shoe manufacturer ECCO Shoes, now creates over 1000 types of organic tanned leathers that are used in the making of ECCO footwear, as well as in pairs from sporting houses to luxury Maisons.

From smooth to pebbled, waterproof to translucent, their expert know-how in the manipulation of this textile has finessed to a point of care that feeds into ECCO’s love for its people, and products — their tanneries now maintaining some of the highest standards of environmental and labour practices around the world.

Perhaps this is why ECCO’s revered and timeless Scandinavian designs remain adored by long-time clients and are drawing in new crowds who are taken by the allure of quiet luxury. Quality speaks for itself, and in that spirit, is epitomized by the brand’s latest collection in an ode to the occasion — classic silhouettes and designs like the versatile ECCO Soft sneaker and ECCO Cozmo sandals are rendered in new colourways for an energetic take on the summer wardrobe, enhanced with the new LYTR technology — a kind of “critical foaming” that combines the use of castor beans with their signature FLUIDFORM for bio-based soles — that improves cushioning and offers better shock absorption with a promise of sustainability.

Their latest Spring Summer 2023 Collection also shines a spotlight on the ECCO Gruuv, one of the newest silhouettes to join the ECCO family. Not only is the sleek and aerodynamic shape a breeze to style, the shoe is also made with the brand’s signature DriTan technology — its leather parts utilise only moisture already present within the hides, saving 25,000,000 litres of water each year at its Netherlands tannery. If that’s not representative of ECCO’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of premium and responsible leather production, that is a nugget of wisdom to enlighten your peers with

In Singapore, the celebration is taken a notch further with the opening of ECCO’s seventh outlet at Raffles City, complete with an interior dressed in a palette of concrete grey, smoked oak, luxurious leather, and black steel to echo the contemporary ambience of Scandinavian calm. If its impressive commitment to innovation and heritage is anything to go by, ECCO’s influential standing in the global industry is here to stay for a long time.
