THE ONITSUKA’s First Capsule Collection Is A Collaboration With Street Style Maven Nick Wooster

  • By Charmaine Tan

THE ONITSUKA taps on street style maven Nick Wooster for a first capsule collection of military-inspired silhouettes and colours.

For Japanese fashion label Onitsuka Tiger’s heritage-inspired, made-in-Japan boutique imprint, the involvement of pioneer street style icon Nick Wooster was obvious — the combination of sleek design, subtle but luxurious details, and a semblance of timelessness and wisdom from Wooster’s experience in the industry makes this first capsule collection worthy of the refinement THE ONITSUKA promises.

Wooster entered the industry via Barney’s New York before serving as the fashion director at retailers Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman. Today, he acts as a consultant for brands while still maintaining his longstanding influence among the fashion crown as one of the most distinctive. To date, he has worked with names like Tiffany & Co., Lardini, Paul & Shark, Cadillac, Kiehl’s and more.

On creating the collection, Wooster said that he began his process by crafting a style as a base — the bomber and skirt pant defined the direction. He then looked to the history and archives of Onitsuka Tiger to derive inspiration and ideas for the footwear, reinterpreting the classic style of the shoes with his flavour.

Employing minimalism with a simple and unifying palette of army green, black and white, the collaboration range spans apparel like a bomber jacket with skirt pants, with lots of utilitarian pockets and loose, movement-friendly dropped shoulders.

THE ONITSUKA’s refined shoe repertoire introduces four footwear models to the collection — the WIGURVE in military green, WIGURVE SIDE GORE BOOT that combines the streamlined sole with a side gore design, the BROGUE CHUKKA that reinterprets the brogue as a mid-cut chukka boot and a soon-to-release STUDDED DERBY. It’s very distinctive of Wooster’s penchant for preppy chic looks, his signature silver pompadour almost seamlessly complementing the Japanese heritage of the brand’s sense of classy.

THE ONITSUKA x Nick Wooster is available exclusively at THE ONITSUKA boutique at #1-14A ION Orchard, and a selection of products are also available here. Once you are done with this story on THE ONITSUKA x Nick Wooster Capsule Collection, click here to catch up with our March 2023 issue.
