The Codex Beauty Labs Shaant Series Is An Ayurvedic Acne-Fighting Range

The Codex Beauty Labs Shaant Series Is An Ayurvedic Acne-Fighting Range
Powered by science, enhanced by Ayurvedic medicine and sustainable in make, the Codex Beauty Labs Shaant (peace or calm in Hindi) series is a range of four acne-fighting products.

The properties of acne-fighting products each rest in their circle in the Venn diagram of cosmetics — reduction of sebum production, exfoliation, hastening of skin turnover, and soothing of irritation — and more often than not, only one or two overlap each other. An intersection of three happens when one gets lucky.

The overlapping of four, however, is a true medical miracle and is achievable with the Codex Beauty Lab’s Shaant collection, the third line under the Silicon Valley cosmetic powerhouse.

Its formula is awash in ancient Hindu wisdom or what its practitioners call Ayurveda. The 5000-year-old “knowledge of life” first found in the Sanskrit epic the Mahābhārata, enjoyed popularity in the nineties (like most things, it flamed out due to mass production of cheaper products), and has seen a cultural resurgence of sorts. Unlike its previous mode of messaging — kitchen therapy or “traditional” healing — this particular approach to Ayurvedic medicine for the Shaant series is informed by science.

“By integrating concepts from Ayurvedic medicine, plant sciences, and food sciences, I look to push the boundaries of integrative therapies to make them better for our patients and to better educate those around me. This is the philosophy behind the Shaant skincare collection for acne-prone skin: Ayurvedic plants, such as Gotu kola or patchouli, that have been vetted with Western scientific tools, like their effect on gene expression in skin cells and clinical tests on patients with acne,“ says Dr Sivamani, the partner behind the series.

“I always love to try to bridge the Ayurvedic principles into the western principles. The way Ayurveda looks at the body is slightly different, but actually, it really beautifully integrates with the western approach when you start building these bridges.” With the science settled — take what is genuinely efficacious from nature and test it rigorously — comes what the brand calls ShaantComplexTM.

It is a blend of terrestrial and marine plants that alleviate the aforementioned signs of acne and also contains the PreservXTM preservation system, a formula that supports the skin’s native microbiome health.  These power the four products from the range, including the Balancing Foaming Cleanser, Refining Toner, Balancing Clay Mask and Balancing Oil Control Cream.

“Increasing levels of stress in our society, poor quality sleep, rising pollution, as well as unhealthy eating and alcohol habits have all contributed to increased acne in both teenagers and adults,” says Dr Barb Paldus, Founder and CEO of Codex Beauty Labs. “Through Ayurvedic plant databases in India, we have identified actives that address two root causes, namely sebum overproduction and accumulation of dead skin cells in pores.”

Non-comedogenic, non-acnegenic, and no-nonsense per every product, the Shaant range is manufactured in an automated cosmetic cGMP ISO22716 facility and is sustainable from its formula down to its packaging. The fifth circle Codex Beauty Labs is adding to the Venn diagram of acne-fighting is the saving of time: it is due to launch an “over the counter” phase with three topical products to ensure the range work even faster.
