#TheDrip — Prada’s Saffiano Leather Mahjong Set

  • By Charmaine Tan

Each week, we dive into the vast archives of our favourite brands and houses to extract and share their most luxurious (and thus, pricey) miscellanea. This week, our drip of choice is Prada’s Saffiano Leather Mahjong Set.

It’s a tad bit early to be preparing for next year’s Chinese New Year festivities but if mahjong is a family affair that happens regardless of the time of the year (including Christmas gatherings), here’s Prada’s Saffiano Leather Mahjong Game set that will make every victory feel more victorious and each loss feel that much less bitter.

The advent of Saffiano leather in luxury can be traced back to Mario Prada, grandfather of Miuccia Prada, who was the one that first applied the distinct diagonal and cross-hatch pattern onto full grain calf leather to create the characteristically durable, scratch-and water-resistant material. Coated in wax, it not only has a glossy shine that makes it look brand new for a long time, it only needs the occasional wipe to maintain.

If you’ve ever associated the word ‘luxury’ with ‘longevity’, Saffiano leather is probably one of the reasons why.

As for the mahjong game itself, evidence from Chinese researchers claims that contemporary mahjong originated from the outskirts of Shanghai around the mid-to late 19th century. It was not very well known by the rest of the world until the 1920s when it was gradually spread to the West via traders, and by a man named Joseph Park Babcock in particular.

Cased in a sleek and inconspicuous black box, all of the acrylic resin playing pieces of Prada’s mahjong set is wrapped in luxurious Saffiano leather, each adorned with metal Prada letterings in the front. With a moss green and white colour being the only two colours to contrast against the black tiles, expect the game to be both an intellectually and aesthetically pleasing experience, especially with the black, red and white chips to complement.
