What makes some of these local or global creatives tick? In this weekly column, visual artist Aundraj Jude (@assthrowknot) shares about some of the anime and ethereal imagery that inspires his work, invoking a sense of otherworldliness that keeps him hungry for more creativity while forcing him to look at art and creativity more holistically through aspects like angles and forms.

1. Classical art: This piece invokes a sense of otherworldliness as well as the ethereal style I draw inspiration from while drawing similarities to classic art.

2. Aspect: Similar to the piece before, this particular art style draws a lot from the ethereal art style and the focus for this one is to also show the grandeur of it all by showing the difference in sizes of the objects.

3. Anime: Being a huge fan of Anime and its art style, I’m drawn to images like these because of the focus points within them (eg. the Red Sun). Drawing attention in different directions and making use of the space is something that helps amplify this piece.

4. Manga: Sometimes, there isn’t a need for multiple colours and objects as a focal point because contrasting colours are all you need to draw an audience in. The hand-drawn Manga style creates faint details that help to not overpower the scene but at the same time, completes it.

5. Gundam art: Mecha/Gundam artworks are high on the list of inspiration for me, and like the piece before, the use of two contrasting colours are all you need. The use of Hiragana text is something I’m a huge fan of as the structure of the text itself is beautiful and easily blends with Japanese artworks of any form.

6. AKIRA: AKIRA to me, is the greatest Anime movie ever. There’s so much of it that has inspired countless other shows, movies, mangas and art styles. I find myself going back to it every time I feel uninspired and somehow get re-fueled, as well as find new inspiration.

7. Diving beings: Growing up in a Catholic household, I grew up being very fascinated with artworks derived or inspired by the faith, particularly ones with ethereal beings like angels and demons. The portrayal of them is so unique and the creativity those artists possessed is hardly tapped on now.

8. Biblical themes: Like the image before, artworks of Biblical themes hold so much inspiration to me as the ability of it to transport its audience to another plane of creativity isn’t tapped on as much, sadly.

9. 3D Art: 3D pieces like these feel like a new form of work as derived from the ones in the last two images. A modern take on the biblical style of art.

10. Evangelion: Evangelion is another Manga/Anime that I feel has changed the genre as a whole. The otherworldly themes as well as its inspirations from Biblical themes resonates with me a lot.
