To dream is to see; that is the fleeting heart of Virgil Abloh’s Louis Vuitton. In his mansion of ideas — some far flung to extremes, many bold not to ignore, and others discreet enough to seduce — the world in which Abloh has manifested for the House remains abundant. In his last piece, the Louis Vuitton Fall Winter 2022 menswear collection sets the voyage on a premise of ‘forever’, where the late artistic director’s work ripples endlessly in his sea of dreams; where his surrealist formulations have never been more abstract, dream-like, and tantalising.
“The work of Virgil Abloh is the very definition of diverse,” we reported in our previous tribute to the late Abloh. “(He) has spent his career at Louis Vuitton confounding expectations, integrating streetwear as a dialect of the House’s core luxury language, and most famously unleaded a streak of conscious adherence to the subversion of traditional gender roles and stereotypes when it pertains to ‘dress’.“
