It’s the Right Time To Smell like Alcohol

  • By Bryan Goh

Alcohol inspired fragrances aren’t a new concept in the world of scented waters but it is highly imperative for us to let you know that far from being simple variations of spirits, perfumers have gotten really crunk on them. They’ve isolated what makes alcohol smell delicious — the toastiness of whisky or the sharp metallic notes of vodka — and created fragrances that centre around the notes without making you smell like you spilt the spirit on yourself.

Here, the ones that made for boozy cheer.

Pictured Above: Launched in 2011, Penhaligon’s Juniper Sling was one of the first examples of alcohol-inspired fragrances done right. A crystal glass rimmed with green lime and an icy concoction of gin, tonic, and vodka sloshing around inside, it’s one to beat the heat — it’s also part of The Shilla Duty Free Singapore’s Fragrance Festival collection, a celebration that runs till 18 August 2022 where travellers can receive special gifts when they shop for participating fragrances in stores and online. If you’re travelling for longer, there is a frangrance bundle promotion that gives you up to 32% off your purchase.

Besides being a woody-chypre fragrance that’s infinitely elegant, Byredo’s Oud Immortel also contains a zesty and syrupy note of limoncello that adds a zing to its tobacco and oak moss notes.

The alcohols used in Carolina Hererra 212 VIP Men include vodka and gin but strangely, it smells like rum which might be in part due to it being blended with amber, spices and pepper.

Put the lime in the coconut and then add a heavy pour of rum: you’ll get Creed Virgin Island Water, an olfactory slice of paradise.

The intense longevity of cognac in Angel’s Share by Kilian is because it is the only top note used, its sweet-bitterness allowing the middle and base notes of woods to “open” up into a gourmand-like scent.

The popularity of alcohol inspired fragrances could be chalked up to one contender: Maison Margiela Replica’s Jazz Club that contains rum absolute and is an absolute beast itself in terms of longevity.

The specific alcohol isn’t mentioned in the ingredlients list of Tom Ford Lost Cherry but if we had to hazard a guess, it’s most likely a cherry-based rum that amps up the fragrance’s sweetness.
