Kim Jones roots contemporary silhouettes with Monsieur Dior’s passion for nature in the Dior Jardin capsule collection.
Just a few days shy of the announcement of Dior’s new Jardin de la Rose Dior — a garden committed to the regenerative cultivation of the first rose created for cosmetic skincare — the Maison and Kim Jones are quick to showcase their next botanical-themed offering with Dior Jardin, a capsule from their Winter 2022 collection.
This is more than a recurring theme for the French house, even though their luxury gardening set and the paradisal Summer 2023 collection were only launched within the past two months. Christian Dior was an avid gardener and believed these manicured green spaces to be an eternal source of inspiration; he loved tending to the gardens of his parents’ seaside villa from a young age, and it was there that he developed a particular fondness for flowers, and more specifically, roses.
While the floral entourage for his first haute couture fashion show in 1947 included a multitude of delphiniums, sweet peas and lilies of the valley, the Queen of Flowers was to remain Monsieur’s favourite. The rose’s inimitable charm stems not only from its varieties, perfume, colours and even petals, it also comes from the investment needed to care for them.
This is why it appears here in spritely washes of white and pink, or black and turquoise — joyful and abundant like Christian Dior’s creative legacy, and modern and luminous in the spirit of Dior Men by Kim Jones.
Relaxed in form, the collection replaces the “I” in Dior with a single rose stalk on an ivory sweatshirt and a blush-pink T-shirt. Intarsia knit sweaters are reminiscent of Christmas jumpers, and shirt-short sets draw parallels with matching family outfits — their rose bulbs are arranged all over to a maximalist effect.
Though accessories like a bandana and tie receive the same floral treatment, Kim Jones’ signature attention to detail is not to be remiss. A silver-finished brass and resin rose necklace proves to be a fuss-free but thoughtful embellishment, while cuffs of black trousers reveal roses in mint green, a street-informed addition that complements the softer shades of the essential B30 Sneaker.
The collection also sees a Harrington overshirt and slim fit jeans covered in an enticing pattern of smoky grey rose petals, only to be discerned when held up close. Along with classic black iterations of the Saddle backpack, bag and the Lingot 22 bag, the collection maintains an ingeniously well-balanced act between the calm and wild of flourishing foliage.
