TAG Heuer and Ryan Gosling Team Up for The Gray Man

  • By Asaph Low

TAG Heuer Teams up With Ryan Gosling for The Gray ManEven with roots steep in motor racing, TAG Heuer is no stranger to the film universe as it was immortalised in pop culture as the TAG Heuer Monaco graced the wrist of the late, great Steve McQueen in the legendary film Le Mans. The 1971 classic, based on the gruelling 24-hour Le Mans endurance motorsport race, served up plenty of iconic images of the TAG Heuer Monaco poking out from under the right sleeve of McQueen’s white Nomex racing suit with the “Chronograph Heuer” patch emblazoned on the right shoulder.

Almost 50 years on, TAG Heuer looks to rekindle that sort of relationship with the silver screen as it partners with Netflix for the new film The Gray Man. The international spy thriller sees TAG Heuer brand ambassador and face of the iconic TAG Heuer Carrera Three Hands Ryan Gosling reprise the role of Sierra Six with his trusty companion, the TAG Heuer Carrera Three Hands, strapped on his wrist.

TAG Heuer Teams up With Ryan Gosling for The Gray ManWith the movie starting in Bangkok, Thailand and ending in Virginia, USA, ghost operative Sierra Six finds himself tangled in a mess when an assassination hit does not go according to plan. A global hunt ensues as the high-octane chase takes Sierra Six across various scenic locations in Europe which mirror the high-speed pursuit on the racetrack that saw the birth of the iconic TAG Heuer Carrera. Despite being bruised, beaten and battered, Sierra Six demonstrated grit, determination and sheer will that embodies TAG Heuer’s “Don’t crack under pressure” motto perfectly.

Filmmakers Joe and Anthony Russo, best known for directing four films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, are behind the camera lens of The Gray Man. In a separate interview with NBC News, the Russo brothers said they were inspired by “Die Hard” and “Lethal Weapon” and the film did just that. Expect lots of gunfire, explosions and witty humour (look out for the cheeky jab at James Bond) as Ryan Gosling serves up a frenetic spectacle well worth your two hours. Chris Evans reconnects with the Russo brothers once again for this action-packed film, joined by the likes of Billy Bob Thornton, Ana de Armas and Regé-Jean Page among others.

“We are thrilled to partner with Netflix for The Gray Man — not only does it star our very own brand ambassador in the form of Hollywood icon Ryan Gosling, but with a cast that also includes Chris Evans and Regé-Jean Page. With the Russo brothers directing, it already is the must-watch movie of 2022. And what else would Gosling’s unflappable Sierra Six wear than a TAG Heuer Carrera Three Hands – an iconic timepiece that is designed for those who don’t crack under pressure” says TAG Heuer CEO Frédéric Arnault.

The TAG Heuer Carrera Three Hands

TAG Heuer Teams up With Ryan Gosling for The Gray ManEqual parts suave, elegant and refined, Sierra Six’s choice of watch is the TAG Heuer Carrera Date 39mm, released as part of its new generation TAG Heuer Carrera Three Hand which was first launched in the early 2000s. The story of the TAG Heuer Carrera however dates back to 1963 when former TAG Heuer CEO Jack Heuer introduced the watch (a chronograph to be exact) to the world. Since then, the timepiece has attained legendary status as the timeless, sporty and elegant chronograph is the ultimate showcase for the brand’s fascinating motor racing heritage.

Named after the Carrera Panamericana car race, the TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph was built on the cornerstone of legibility as Jack Heuer’s obsession with readability saw the birth of a watch rid of superfluous decorations as only three lines of texts are retained (Carrera, Heuer and Swiss Made). Its design language was apparent from the get-go as it was kept pure and minimal to allow quick relaying of information, especially for race car drivers.

The TAG Heuer Carrera Three Hands was born a few decades later in the early 2000s as a tribute to the dashboard timers produced by the brand since the 1930s. TAG Heuer viewed it as the perfect foil to the Carrera Chronograph — both equally adept whether it is recording or telling time in the most legible way possible. In redesigning a classic, TAG Heuer retained its hallmarks of legibility and modernity as it expanded the collection into four distinct families — Carrera Day Date 41mm, Carrera Twin-Time 41mm, Carrera Date 39mm (seen here) and Carrera Date 29mm.

The TAG Heuer Carrera Date 39mm model displays the refined TAG Heuer Carrera styling to perfection. A subtle sunburst effect that lends a touch of refinement to an otherwise minimalist layout. A bolder pair of handsets and indexes outfitted with rhodium plating reinforces Jack Heuer’s vision of legibility. The TAG Heuer Carrera Date 39mm is powered by the Calibre 5 automatic movement and is equipped with a new case with refined lugs and an ergonomic H-shaped link bracelet for extra wrist comfort.
