Jonathan Anderson has clearly got tartan on his mind. Fall/Winter 2017 heralds a season devoted to all manner of the classic check as the designer and Creative Director turns to tartan for Loewe‘s latest menswear line.
Make no mistake: there’s nothing traditional about this collection. Injecting utility wear with a subversive bent, Loewe explores a teenage fantasy of what it means to dress freely today. Menswear archetypes are challenged, while classic Loewe items – such as the Fisherman trousers and asymmetric shirt – are revisited and reinvented with new fabrications in tartan patchwork. The result is a dichotomous collection that is simultaneously constructed and broken down.
Even Loewe’s accessories are given the total tartan treatment. Much like the rest of the collection, mismatched tartan prints are artfully patched together to exaggerated effect. Case in point: the iconic Elephant Charm now sports a bright red Scottish check, as well as the innovative Puzzle XL Tartan Bag, which combines black calfskin with wool tartan – a renewed look for one of Loewe’s most enduring designs.
