The latest Louis Vuitton Spring/Summer 2014 collection sees the luxury wonder boy going a road-trip across the Wild West; but in true Vuitton style, they’re not doing it on a broke-down rented vehicle, they’re doing it first class. Ever since Kim Jones appointment as style director at Vuitton’s Men’s Studio two years ago, the brand has experienced a major revamp in their approach to luxury: a more out-in-the-wilderness guise as compared to the stay-in-the-charity-event kind of guy the previous Vuitton man may have manifested into. Sure enough, the wardrobe in the show-featured all-things American; more specifically, the famous tradition of an old-fashioned road-trip.
All the archetypes of the American male persona were there: a boy scout, a gas jockey, a hippie, the preps, the Wall Street brokers, frat boys, and so on; and within each character, an obvious stroke from the Vuitton DNA was there. Boy scout’s cotton drill parkas had Vuitton emblems and badges sewn on; coats had elbow patches done in crocodile; prom jackets women from sumptuous kimono silk; jackets cleverly disguised as denim were actually made from supple suede; the clever but subtle details that justify the high value and price tags when these garments hit the stores next year.
The overall air from the show had a very natural easiness to it; everything just seemed to fit together very effortlessly; wrapped bandannas and tie-dye jackets over Wall Street suits was one of the prime executions. As for the final evening looks, a particular jacket with gleaming LV jacquard was a gaudy (yet still covetable) example of how well Jones understand the Vuitton customer: a younger generation with a more energetic soul that’s not afraid to show of their wealth.
