Following the trend of sleeker, lower-profile sneakers that have dominated the industry, Balenciaga stomps into the arena with its own take. Enter Balenciaga’s Monday Shoe.
Sambas, Cortezes and Mexico 66s have all reigned the sneaker sphere as of late; where skinny, down-to-earth footwear profiles are championing the sleeker cause — over maximal silhouettes that swept the industry in the late 2010s. To be brief, the mid-sized chunky sneaker no longer rules the court, and Balenciaga understands this well. Operating in extremes; the maison follows up after its larger-than-life XL-sneaker triptych, in favour of the Monday. Characterised by a dynamic all-leather profile — a first for the house — the sneaker combines a technical rubber sole with a wholly leather upper that breathes as much comfort as it bears in its appearance.
As seen on house ambassador PP Krit, the Monday is as streamlined as they come. Coming in five different colour iterations, as well as pristine and worn-out treatments, the Monday shoe is distinctly reminiscent of the athletic models of the past. Compounding this vintage effect are the intentional and delicate nods to the house’s skilful hand at craftsmanship, where raw edges and distressing are woven into its design, echoing an artisanal character.
