Prada & The Great Gatsby

Only a couple of months left to the premiere of the much anticipated adaptation of The Great Gatsby and we’re all ready to be wowed by more Downton Abbey-esque costumes from the Roaring Twenties. Those of us who miss the European glamour and sophistication of the Crawleys (till Season 4 reappears on our screens anyway) are in for a treat as fashion designers have been roped in to work with costumers to illustrate the aristocratic styles of the era. Miuccia Prada, who previously worked with director Baz Luhrmann on Romeo + Juliet, has already unveiled sketches for the effervescent Daisy Buchanan (Carey Mulligan), while male leads Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) will be dressed to the nines by preppy American brand Brooks Brothers.

The latter, in fact, has been mentioned several times in Fitzgerald’s writings as a representation of the ultimate gentleman’s purveyor of fine clothing, so Gatsby’s perfectly tailored suits represent historical authenticity. And that’s half the battle won, given the notorious penchant for film adaptations to fail to live up to hype, especially if the source is high profile. With this latest incarnation of the literary classic, we can rest easy knowing that, at the very least, we’ll enjoy the pomp, ceremony and dapper clothing of the era.
