Paris Saint-Germain Suits Up In Full-Kit Dior

  • By Vanessa Grace Ng

Kicking it back: Paris Saint-Germain and the Parisian house of Dior Men reunite for another season together.

Competitive, or professional movement can be dated back pre-millennium, beyond the Babe Ruth-era of baseball’s peak or the Elvis Presley-era of dancer greats. Heck, even Spartacus‎, the Roman gladiator, has found his way into pop culture hall of fame, with films and TV programmes centring his position as one of the heroes of ancient-day sport. And naturally, to be movers and shakers would be to draw the attention of the public purview. Fans flock in, and suddenly, the celebrity of movement re-establishes itself.

And Dior understands this phenomenon with supremacy. The house has a long history of dressing stars, culminating notably in its long-standing involvement with Old Hollywood circa the 1950s. Actress Marlene Dietrich epitomised the symbiotic relationship between Hollywood and Dior well. She was responsible for the infamous “No Dior, no Dietrich” — a phrase fashioned in her demands to only be costumed in the French maison’s creations. And as sports have become a public domain, and its players household figures, it is no wonder that Dior too, have stepped up to the plate of costuming — well, dressing — some of the greats of the pitch. Enter Paris Saint-Germain.

The Red and Blues have always persisted as one of the premiers, despite challenges in structuring in the mid-aughts. Fast forward a decade later, the team has forged a respectable and reputable esteem for themselves in the eyes of football-loving fans and casual followers alike. And when we say world-class, we mean it: PSG is now comprised of world-class players like Kylian Mbappé, Lee Kang-In, Milan Skriniar, Nordi Mukiele, Presnel Kimpembe and Ashraf Hakim; all of whom are reprising positions as models and mannequins in a renewed partnership with Dior Men.

For the third season, Dior Men artistic director Kim Jones has taken on the responsibility of suiting up these celebrity athletes. Hues of black, blue and grey are borrowed to fill relaxed silhouettes of Harrington-style jackets and double-breasted suits. And if there is a convergence between fashion and athletics, it would be the eye for the minute. Thus naturally, the collection unfolds with impeccable detail and intricacies. Scarfs are comprised of cashmere and ties of silk. The house’s Hit The Road backpacks are encrusted with the inimitable CD Diamond motif, while its Explorer loafers flash an alternate house signature, the CD Icon, on its vamp. The level of attention to detail is unsurprising. Dior Men is ultimately dressing one of its country’s prides and joys; so why should the former spare the signature savoir-faire that it is ubiquitous for?
