Dior’s Cannage Steps Into The Spotlight For Summer 2024

  • By Charmaine Tan

The Cannage — Dior’s emblematic design — takes centrestage for Kim Jones’ collection for Summer 2024, as seen on the B9s sneakers.

Icons are not made with a mere chance encounter. They embody reaffirmations and storied histories that tell of its lasting allure, its age telling of its ability to accept paradigm shifts in culture and stay forever present, in the now.

Of Dior’s many design codes, Kim Jones has chosen to reinterpret the Cannage this season — the stitching pattern that brings to mind the quilted surface of the Lady Dior bag, and this pair of B9s sneakers from the creative director’s Summer 2024 dispatch.

“Cannage,” actually alludes to an old fashion technique called caning, where rattan is woven onto a frame. This decorative motif soon became synonymous with furniture design in the mid-18th century, before becoming a part of Dior’s identity; cane chairs with the motif were part of the house’s old couture salon and Christian Dior’s first ever showing for his namesake French couture house. Since then, the motif has been fashioned onto multiple other fabrics like this tweed, and has appeared on everything from perfume packaging to jewelry.

In an exclusive look at the savoir-faire of the B9s sneakers in versatile navy, we can see the Cannage being woven from the loom and then combined with leather trimmings and laser-cut Dior charm signature to form the exquisite upper of the shoe.

After being combined with the sole, the refined architecture of Cannage is complemented by bi-colour laces, the sporty and classic spirits intertwined and refined as a whole.

Elsewhere, the Cannage is revisited on sweaters and Harrington jackets in captivating hues of beige, pink or grey, while the jewelry riff of the same navy tones of this pair of B9s, a series of organic pieces combining marble, silver and freshwater pearls.
