Some melodies will resonate with you for decades, and even for generations to come. Thai pop-rock ensemble COCKTAIL and their two-decades worth of discography have been there for it all — moments of young love, heartbreak and everything in between. When the quartet concluded their musical journey at the end of last year, a palpable legacy was left behind. Helping shape the Thai music scene forever, COCKTAIL has inspired a wave of young artists to engage with their artistry, transcribing raw emotions into melodies and verses that reverberate deeply with the soul. As a testament to the band’s musicality, nine artists have come together to reimagine iconic tracks in a special album titled Ours Ever – Tribute to COCKTAIL.
Using the Mac and Logic Pro as creative companions in the production process, the artists become even closer to their interpretation of COCKTAIL’s music, expressing the emotional ebbs and flows with an exactness that rings true to how they embody these tracks. Men’s Folio catches up with XX, also known as Porsche, on the creative process of bringing his cover of เรา to life.
“COCKTAIL’s music speaks so honestly about yearning and emotion that it felt like they were narrating our lives. They have been present at every stage of my journey as an artist too, given the huge part they play in Thai music culture,” shares XX. When the project was first introduced to him, he went through the legendary band’s extensive catalogue. “From the start, I knew I wanted to create a love song that felt a little haunting — beautiful, yet unsettling. When I landed on เรา, its energy resonated with me immediately.” The deeply romantic theme of an everlasting love was something he knew he could, and wanted to twist into his own world.
Once the decision was made, he started breaking down the track by sketching the arrangement. “I thought of the parts I wanted to move, the elements I could add and ways I could reharmonise the chords.” XX’s way of honouring COCKTAIL was through building upon what was already there and bringing his own flair into the track. Describing the creation of the cover as an intimate, hands-on process, XX credits the experience to the Mac and Logic Pro, Apple’s digital audio workstation, for their speed and ease. “The Apple silicon on my MacBook Pro made a huge difference. It’s crazy fast, so I could load up all my plug-ins, try different effects, experiment with layers — it never slowed me down. I was able to stay in that creative zone instead of stopping to deal with tech difficulties,” he shares.
The Apple ecosystem has made it possible for XX to remain in his flow state, too. “How everything works together — the Mac, iPad, iPhone — it’s really changed the way I create. If I had an idea, or heard rain and thunder outside, I’d record it on my phone on Voice Memos and AirDrop it straight into Logic Pro.” Rather than waiting for a studio session, he gets to capture inspiration anywhere and drop it directly into his track. The result? A more organic, faster and genuinely more fun creative process, he says.
Listeners will find it difficult to miss out on the refined emotional nuances captured on XX’s track, alongside the rest of the tribute album, as all of them are mixed in Spatial Audio, capturing their vivid soundscapes. “I first envisioned the track as a scene in my head — the atmosphere, the mood — and then built the track around my imagination. As this EP was about creating in Spatial Audio, I actually aimed to produce the track with this experience in mind before creating in stereo, which is also a new approach for me.” With a cinematic vision in mind, XX intends the track to feel like a little movie. “When you listen in Spatial Audio, you don’t just hear sounds — you feel where they are. Sometimes they appear from above, behind or from the side. Creating with a 360-degree vibe in mind was a huge opportunity to put my spin on this track,” he shares.
What is most inspiring about the project is how artistry inspires a new wave of creatives to express themselves. Just as COCKTAIL’s melodies have permeated the conscience of young artists, Apple’s tools have made the creative process all the more approachable, whether or not you have a recording label to back you. “This is the best era for anyone who wants to make music. There’s no need to carry a bunch of analogue gear anymore; your whole studio is literally in your Mac. You can write, record, edit… all on the same device, anywhere you are.” Logic Pro makes it easy for the curious and inexperienced to experience music production, with easy-to-use features that lead to studio-quality output.
