As part of a pre-cursor to the first ever Waterbomb Singapore, we take five with South Korean rapper Loco as he preps for a long-awaited return to a stage on our sunny shores.
If you’re familiar with how Koreans do summer, you’ll probably know what Waterbomb is all about. It’s that one music festival that involves the refreshing spray of water guns, and allows your favourite music artistes to get doused in water while performing — whether that’s supposed to keep you cool or make the temperature go up even more, we are not that sure. This year, the once Korea-exclusive festival is making a world tour around the region, with Singapore being a stop.
Ahead of the festival debut on our sunny shores, we speak to Waterbomb-regular and South Korean rapper Loco for a chat about what he’s been up to so far, what he’s been listening to, and what we can expect when he makes a long-awaited return to Singapore for the festival.
It’s been more than a decade since your appearance on Show Me The Money. What do you think is the biggest difference between the person you were then and now?
The biggest difference…is probably that I can make music without worrying about making a living!
Collaboration makes up a big part of your discography. How do you pick who to collaborate with; is it song or artist first?
I think it’s more about the song! Even if there’s an artist I really want to work with, I don’t make suggestions unless I have a song that fits.
Speaking of collaborations, congratulations on your most recent stint on Jimin’s “Smeraldo Garden Marching Band”! How did this collaboration come about?
Thank you! Jimin gave me the first proposal and we started working together. I met him first to hear about the concept, and my verse went through many revisions till completed, so I think it’s a song I’m more fond of.
There are many newer and younger artists around. Is there anyone on your collaboration wish list? Whether it be an idol or indie artist.
I’ve been really enjoying listening to Hong Dabin (DPR LIVE) giggles album lately. I’m thinking it’d be fun to work on something again after such a long time!
Who are three Korean artists you would recommend to people interested in Korean music?
SUMIN, Omega Sapien and Paul Blanco
You have been performing at Waterbomb for many years. Is there anything special you would like to say to the audience who will be attending the first Waterbomb in Singapore?
I’m going to Singapore after a long time! I love getting splashed with water on the Waterbomb stage. Please treat me well, haha. I hope we have as much fun as possible!
