RIMOWA Gets Into the Grid: Reviving a Late 60’s Classic

When ‘y’ meets ‘x’.

By Dhani Salbini

We all know, love and recognise RIMOWA’s iconic grooved aluminium aesthetic since the German-engineered suitcases became a luxury status symbol in the year 1950, when the signature look was invented. It has stuck in our minds since, and for good reason, too. Robust, durable, and eternal (a lifetime warranty is guaranteed with every suitcase purchase), RIMOWA balances a fine line between disruption and tradition — how else would the Maison be able to keep up with its enduring relevance for more than a 100 years without losing itself?

Enter: a revived niche only hardcore fans of the brand can only recognise. The Maison launches a limited edition line titled, The 2026 Classic Aluminum Grid collection, which riffs off an archival hand-carry case from 1969. Don’t be fooled by a re-edition thinking that nothing has changed. The 57-year gap between the first launch and now also means a 57-years of innovation now distilled into the 2026 suitcases.

The Grid collection is exactly what you think it is — an added embossed groove on the ‘x’ axis, forming up a grid-shaped pattern on the iconic RIMOWA silver aluminium shell. The same design language carries through inside the suitcases as well, with a soft quilted interior lining.

The 2026 Classic Aluminum Grid collection comes in three variations: Hand-Carry, Cabin, and in Trunk-sizes, the first for a re-edition launch for the brand, and is now available at RIMOWA stores worldwide and on their online website. Don’t take your time though, as only 1,969 numbered pieces of this limited run are available for purchase.
