Peggy Gou and Lenny Kravitz Want You To Believe in Love Again

  • By Jon-Patric De Mello

Peggy Gou and Lenny Kravitz rejoice in a sonic marriage of rhythmic house and faultless falsetto.

Where fusions of house, techno and electro meet in dreamlike euphony, South-Korean DJ and producer, Peggy Gou is found. Her style has been lauded as transcending the confines of just one musical enclosure, instead extracting the portions she sees best fit into what has now become her signature triad of the three electronic sounds.

Rocketing to one of the EDM scene’s most sought-after DJs, Gou’s repertoire of musical collaborations is flourishing as well. Remixing tracks from pop-music icons like Kylie Minogue, her latest sees the multi-Grammy-award winning artist, Lenny Kravitz as the vocal apogee of the single.

Titled “I Believe In Love Again”, the duo take the listener through auricular ebb and flows. Gou’s production is deep, bassy and rhythmically periodic, grounding the track in a steady beat that is very much an ode to 90s house and R&B. Making a rare occurrence, Gou fronts a spoken-word verse on the track, imploring her listeners and lover alike, “to feel you’re in a dancefloor.” Kravitz ushers the listener through the highs, his famed falsetto all at once dulcet and at contrast to the back beats, accentuated without stealing the spotlight. His tonality, a rarity among the voices of contemporary male artists. It is not hard to see how a track devoted to celebrating the 90s house and R&B sound would pursue the artistry of one of the period’s pre-eminent vocalists to execute a modern revival.

On the inspiration for the collaboration, Gou spoke of and explored her admiration for Kravitz and that acclaimed period of time. “The 90s have had such a huge influence on my music. People know about my love of the dance/house/rave scene from that time but I’ve always been a big R&B fan, and also a huge fan of Lenny. I listened endlessly to his 1998 album ‘5’ – my personal favourite – but his whole discography is great, totally timeless. He came into the studio and transformed the guide vocal into magic, writing new lyrics and creating that incredible guitar riff.”

A message of rediscovering and finding a belief in love, Gou and Kravitz lyrics are sanguine and evocative, painting pictures of crystal rivers, the four seasons and a rhythmic dance floor — the song is a hopeful proclamation to the wonders of this universal emotion. Gou explains, “‘I Believe In Love Again’ is a strong message of positivity and hope, and we hope everyone feels that when they hear the song.”
