I’m quite certain I have four #MFMF‘s mentioning TikTok so far. Hear me out, this isn’t another revelation of catchy pop music I discovered on TikTok, rather it is a discovery of how many great covers out there that are far better than the original. Here’s my “Unapologetic Covers” playlist of songs I’ve grown to love that I only realised were covers much later in life.

Not In Love ft. Robert Smith — Crystal Castles

Whether you discovered Crystal Castles from the epic British teenage melodrama series — Skins — or through Tumblr during its peak, there’s no doubt that they are a cult classic. What could arguably be their most important track to this day would be a cover of Platinum Blonde’s hidden track. The best part? The edition of Robert Smith from The Cure as lead vocals. What a legend.

Swingin’ Party — Lorde

Yes, Lorde is back. It would only be timely to include her in this list after her comeback earlier this month. Back with her debut effort, the deluxe edition featured a series of additional tracks, including this cover of Swingin’ Party by The Replacements.

goodnight n go — Ariana Grande

Ariana Grande is a woman of surprises and one of them is her obsession with Imogen Heap. This might not work exactly as a cover, but it features the best part of Imogen’s best song. Goodnight and Go is an instant classic, and so is Ariana’s cover. Of all the songs in this lot, this would be my favourite.

Running Up That Hill — Placebo

Kate Bush’s best effort is arguably 1985’s  Running Up That Hill and Placebo’s cover holds up to the same demeanour and exaggeration of the original. Legends again.
