Kim Jae Wook and Krystal Jung Talk ‘Crazy Love’, First Impressions and MoreThe quirky 16-episode-long rom-com series titled Crazy Love saw Kim Jae-Wook and Krystal Jung mixed up in a world of mixed identities and unexpected office romance. Here, the stars talk about their experiences filming the show and working with one another.

Currently streaming on Disney+, ‘Crazy Love’ explores the interesting dynamics of workplace romance with funny twists and turns, with actors Kim Jae Wook and Krystal Jung playing a mathematics genius CEO Noh Go-Jin and secretary Lee Shin-a respectively. And like most Korean rom-com dramas, it’s just as entertaining as you’d expect.

“When I read the script, the fact that the storyline was very unpredictable was attractive, and I had never officially given rom-com a go before, so I wanted to take this opportunity to do that,” explains Jung when asked what got her interested in the script during a roundtable interview for the show.

“I have never done a show centred on comedy and humour, I wanted to do such a show like this for a long time,” follows Kim. “And these tough times caused by COVID have made everyone very depressed and a lot of people all over the world are having a hard time. And as an actor, I wanted to give everybody a good laugh.”

Of course, with two of South Korea’s popular rising stars working together, many were quick to wonder just how their first meeting went. “My first impression of (Kim Jae-Wook) was the way he looks exactly right now, it was just him,” says Jung. “As I spent more time with him filming together, I grew to know more about him, and I also saw the pure and innocent side of him as well.”

“I would like to echo what she said,” copies Kim. “It was just the way she looks like right now, and she might come across as chic, or hard to approach at first, but that’s because she’s shy and it takes time for her to get closer to other people.”

“She opened up to me and told me straight up that she’s pretty introverted and it takes time for her to get used to people. This made me feel much more comfortable and I thought that I knew her better now. With each passing day, she seemed more comfortable filming on the set and now I think, both of us have grown very close to each other. And she said that she saw the innocent side of me, and I think I saw her funny side because she is definitely a very humorous person.”

When asked what the most exciting part about playing such comedic characters was, both actors said they found the freedom of being able to express the energy and anger through their characters to be most fulfilling. “I can find some strange satisfaction out of that because in real life, I would never hit somebody with a bunch of paper, so that’s strangely exhilarating,” Jung elaborates.

“I think this occupation of an actor is very intriguing in that you get to do or to say things that you would never do in real life,” Kim continues. “At the same time, I have to make that character look believable and convincing for the audience, so I have to focus on the acting and there’s this catharsis that always comes with those performances. I can’t describe the scenes in detail because I can’t give away much of the show but every time we filmed these sorts of scenes, I always told Krystal that I think this is the most interesting part about being an actor. So, the comical scenes are both exhausting and very fun at the same time.”

“For me, everything was challenging,” Jung expresses. “We’re already four months, five months into the shoot, but I only recently told Jae-Wook that I think I’m getting used to it now. We shot all the tricky scenes early into the production, so I had a lot of trouble gathering the emotions and adapting to the set, but I tried to do my best. And the character that I played has a submissive attitude all along until she’s diagnosed with terminal cancer and that is the point when her emotions start exploding and she lets everything out. And this sort of performance is very draining for you. So after every single take, I’m very exhausted.”On the contrary, Kim only had good things to say about Jung’s performance.

“She says that, but all the staff on set will say that while she seems to be very anxious and worried before every draining and emotional shoot, once the camera starts rolling, she starts exuding this energy and puts on a very compelling performance. So we’re not worried about her at all and we know that she’s just saying that as once the camera starts rolling, she’s brilliant. She’s made for the camera.”
