Water lies at the most fundamental layer of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, alongside food, shelter and warmth. Given Singapore’s advanced water purification technology that provides potable water straight out of the tap, what place does the concept of premium, luxury water have when its most basic form already keeps our physiological needs satiated? For the Singapore-based premium water brand JÄÄDE, which sources its spring water from Finland, the goal is not so much about the premiumization of hydration — according to them, it is more about delivering a taste of purity that comes from the most uninterrupted experience of nature.
“We find that the misconception isn’t about bottled water itself, but about assuming all water is the same. Rather than considering JÄÄDE to be a direct competitor of tap water, we see it as a form of connecting with something real — like nature,” explains JÄÄDE founder Allan Poh. What the brand considers real is the unprocessed, unaltered elixir drawn from a deep aquifer beneath Finland’s Salpausselkä Ridge, which is located in the city of Lahti. “Formed during the last Ice Age and is uncontaminated by today’s standards, choosing JÄÄDE isn’t about quenching thirst, it’s about experiencing the purest water nature can offer.”
The reason why JÄÄDE’s spring water is clean for consumption without any artificial processing is due to the natural filtration process that melted snow and rainwater undergo, passing through sediment layers made of porous sand and gravel deposits. The clarity it boasts also makes it the perfect palate cleanser for fine dining experiences. “In fine dining, every element contributes to the experience. Water may be offered in passing, but its presence is constant.” Instead of competing with the food or wine, the soft mouthfeel and balanced minerality of JÄÄDE work in tandem to cleanse the palate gently, allowing each course to have its moment during the meal. Can subtlety lead to a lasting impression? JÄÄDE thinks so. “The purity of a sip and the stillness it brings will stay with you. Even in a moment as brief as ‘Still or sparkling’, that is the presence we aim to create,” shares Poh.
Well-decorated in its achievements that include winning Best New Brand at the Global Water Drinks Awards 2024 and Best Premium Beverage at the World Beverage Innovation Awards 2024, the latest mark of prestige was becoming the official water partner for this year’s Singapore Food Festival. “It was an honour for JÄÄDE, not just for the visibility, but also for the alignment in values. We champion the festival’s celebration of culinary creativity, craftsmanship and culture by creating moments of purity between flavours — stillness amid sensory richness,” Poh explains. For JÄÄDE, even something as simple as water can hold meaning as a refined companion to exceptional food, especially when it has precious origins.
More than just fine establishments, the JÄÄDE Sparkling Spring Water and Natural Finnish Spring Water are now available through select premium retailers, Little Farms and MEIDI-YA. When asked how the brand plans to communicate its premium attributes in a market that is already saturated with longstanding players, Poh wants to lead with quiet confidence. Circling back to the pedigree of its origins to the visceral mouthfeel, the goal was to never compete through noise. “Over time, true quality leaves an impression — even without introduction,” Poh confidently establishes.
Water. Hydrogen oxide. JÄÄDE’s goal was never meant to overcomplicate or romanticise the act of hydration, but to offer a refined perspective on clarity itself. In an ingredients list this bare, where there is little room for fluff, the nuances of something as simple as water become heightened to the nth degree.
