Flanery is Back With Her New Single "Layers"
Before we delve into “Layers” by Flanery, let’s talk about how Aude Giraud is a woman of many pursuits — she fills your Instagram feed with a sort of attainable boho-ness, she writes as beautifully as she photographs the little details of her charmed life and because #GaellicCool, she even does floral arrangements. However, her latest endeavour as Flanery sees her crooning into a microphone while strumming the guitar — the kind of music you’d play to lull you into a relaxed state even if you’re plagued by deadlines.

Here, Flanery takes us through her latest single Layers — one that coincides with her giving birth to a baby girl just over a month ago.

Hi Flanery, congrats on giving life. How has motherhood been treating you?
Hello! And thank you.  The first weeks were like a hurricane of love and challenges.  It goes very fast. It’s like a new job you have to learn. And sometimes without the coaching needed.

Well, that gives more inspiration to write new songs!

Do you think that being a mother changed your sound?

Not the sound per se, but it definitely brings more questionings, and the experience of it is deep enough to influence your art.

It’s unconditional love and love is a major source of inspiration in music.

What have you learnt about yourself from when you started till now?
That things need to take time sometimes, especially in this crazy pandemic time; that when you open a door, no matter what you have chosen to do, it’s better to explore than to give up — because the worst would be to live with regrets.

The sad thing about musicians is that they’re sometimes pigeon holed into being “the next new insert-singer-name-here”, what do you think is the most authentic thing about yourself?
I have no goal of becoming a pop star.  I do what I like, what I believe in, without thinking about a strategy or what other people would think.

I try to be honest with myself, I just want to share my emotions and my music. Because, in a way, it heals me.

Can you  take us through a story of a single that perhaps most people do not know about?
“Oh Boy” is the “hantu” side of Flanery. With my producer, we used to joke about how haunting the song could sound by adding layers of my voice in different harmonies. And some of them were recorded on my phone during the Circuit Breaker.

I would wake up at night and send him an “Ahhh”. If you listen closely you can hear those details.

How about your latest single, “Layers” then? What are you exploring in it as Flanery without giving it too far away?
“Layers” is a song about being vulnerable and surviving everyday challenges (big or small). Keeping your head above the water when you seem to drown.

It resonates with my answer about motherhood in a way…

How about in the future then? Do you feel yourself keeping up a constant sound?

I try to live in the present as much as possible. My sound will evolve with who I am or become.
