2023 marked the beginning of his solo career, but BANG YEDAM is no stranger to the South Korean entertainment scene. In this exclusive interview with Men’s Folio, the singer talks about his new era of musicality, collaborating with WINTER of aespa and his latest single “Officially Cool”.
BANG YEDAM is one to watch. The 22-year-old has spent a better portion of his life in the entertainment industry — a fact that may be missed when considering his illustrious resumé, which includes his tenures on the famed reality programme “K-pop Star” at age 11, as well as his former membership in explosive boy group TREASURE. From his come-up on the K-entertainment scene at age 5, it seems as though BANG YEDAM’s career trajectory has been mapped out from his childhood. Beyond his participation in the recording of several theme songs for TV programs from then, the soloist has since honed his craft and sound, developing a discography that includes soulful R&B tunes and ventures into alt-rock.

And if one were to look closer at the credits for his music, it would reveal BANG YEDAM’s status as a triple threat. Besides his melodic singing on his debut EP, “Only One’ he is credited for the songwriting, composition, and arrangement — something that he set out to achieve with his solo career. But since then, BANG YEDAM has repeatedly shown that his solo work is not a journey he is venturing into alone. He’s collaborated with big names — B.I., Big Naughty, and now, WINTER of aespa — solidifying his presence in the entertainment industry. His latest single, “Officially Cool” is perhaps BANG YEDAM coming to his own. Marking his first duet song, the track is as rhythmic and punchy. Injected with smooth, sultry vocals of both WINTER and BANG YEDAM and accentuated by twinkly backtracks and high notes, it recalls a refreshing springtime aura, making it a timely release for the season.
Below, Men’s Folio speaks with the soloist on his latest single “Officially Cool”, his dream collaborators, and his love for his fans.
What inspired “Officially Cool”?
It came from our creative meeting. When I started this project, I deeply considered and reflected to find the right feeling as much as possible, since I thought that the song itself should be sung with as much emotion as possible.
Can you describe “Officially Cool” in three words?
Dreamy, fantastic, trickling.
In K-pop, “colour” is used to describe the soundscape of a track. What is the colour you think “Officially Cool” has?
Purple!
You released your first solo EP “Only One” last November, “INFJ” with Big Naughty and B.I. in December and now you’re coming back with “Officially Cool”. How do you feel about your musical growth?
Collaborations allow me to receive a lot of inspiration, especially as a songwriter. Each collaborator has different ways of feeling and expressing their emotions, which has helped me to grow.
Who would be a dream collaborator?
I would like to work with various artists who I think will create an interesting synergy!
What was it like working with WINTER of aespa?
I am really excited about this song. Especially because WINTER (of aespa) has such a beautiful voice, I was really expecting this sound from the beginning of production. Even when we were preparing for this song, I had a very good, and significant time [working with her].

“Only One” has a sound quite like an alternative-rock ballad, while “INFJ” is more R&B. Are there other genres you would like to explore?
I want to try genres that have deeper colours, or those that are trendy. I like to listen to Pluggnb, so maybe that!
In K-pop, dance challenges have become a big thing. Is there going to be one for “Officially Cool”? And is there anyone in particular you’d love to do the challenge with?
I want to do a challenge with my fans! Even if it is not a dance challenge, there are fun sections in between the song, so please enjoy it!
