Grand Seiko Unveils the Spring Drive SBGA481 “Tokyo Lion” as the Latest Member of the Lion Pride

Grand Seiko’s lion has long been emblematic of the manufacture, with a specially designed case back medallion fitted on the first Grand Seiko Watch. It was not until 2019 that a series of watches were released under the Grand Seiko Sport Collection as a tribute to the apex predator. However, its majestic presence was exclusively reserved for limited edition references. The start of 2023 saw a shift as the Japanese manufacture debuted the SBGC253 chronograph GMT version as a mainstay in the collection, which is now joined by the latest member to the lions’ pride, the Grand Seiko Sport Collection Spring Drive SBGA481 “Tokyo Lion”.

At first glance, the SBGA481 adopts a different case construction from other Grand Seiko Sport Collection pieces. The sculptural design mimics a lion’s imposing, bold and powerful physique. Despite its perceived heft, Grand Seiko ensures its wearing comfort with a High-intensity Titanium case and bracelet. Faceted planes on the 44.5mm case replete with Grand Seiko’s famed Zaratsu polishing alongside fine hairline finishing exhibit the immense talents of Grand Seiko’s artisans.

Beneath the dual curve sapphire crystal is Grand Seiko’s signature naturalistic scenery and imagery — in this instance, the lion’s mane. Repeated soft, short brushings bring the textured dial to life as the lustrous dial shimmers with light. Bold indexes and a uniquely shaped hour hand ensure a striking appearance. Given the watch’s sports affiliation, the SBGA481 is rated to 200m water resistance and features Grand Seiko’s proprietary luminescent Lumibrite coated on the dial elements to ensure legibility even under low light conditions.

Grand Seiko’s inimitable Spring Drive Calibre 9R65 purrs within the SBGA481, giving the seconds hand its acclaimed smooth glide motion. The unique Spring Drive innovation generates energy like every other luxury mechanical watch but combines it with an electronic regulator to deliver unrivalled levels of precision at ±15 seconds deviation per month on average. Further advancements in the calibre ensure shock resistance when faced with extreme conditions and supply 72 hours of power reserve.
