Few calibres in the watchmaking industry are as revered as Zenith’s El Primero. Through the industry’s eyes, the world’s first integrated automatic high-frequency chronograph movement changed the trajectory of modern watchmaking with a new mechanical rhythm in 1969. For Zenith, the movement became synonymous with the manufacture’s pursuit of precision, performance, and technical innovation. More than half a century on, the familiar and rapid whiz of the chronograph second hand is a reminder of the El Primero’s inseparable relationship with the chronograph complication.
That narrative is set to change as Zenith’s newly minted Chronomaster Solo Sport is primed to challenge that notion. For the first time, Zenith is presenting a time-only three-handed watch within its chronograph-dominated Chronomaster lineup. Instead of relegating the change as a simplification, Zenith frames it as a distillation of the El Primero. The omission of the chronograph sub-counters and scales shifts attention to reveal the El Primero’s very essence — its high-frequency cadence.
Within the Chronomaster Solo Sport is Zenith’s El Primero 3620 calibre based on the El Primero 3600 chronograph movement. Given the calibre’s high operating frequency, a silicon escapement ensures the longevity of the components thanks to its low surface friction among its other desirable properties. A graphic dial helps communicate the presence of a high-frequency calibre, as a repeating 45° tilted Z motif mimics a pulse line. The pattern is engraved on either a sunray-finished white ceramic or a polished black or brown ceramic dial framed by a “shark tooth” minute track inspired by historical Zenith references.
Apart from the defining change, much of the Chronomaster Solo Sport’s blueprint remains nearly identical to its counterpart: the Chronomaster Sport. The former’s case diameter has been slightly reduced from 41mm to 40mm, while water resistance has been increased to 200m, making it a highly wearable companion for the day’s adventures.
Another major change to the Chronomaster Sport collection at large is the introduction of Zenith’s new ZENCLASP™ folding clasp innovation. With more than three years invested in research, development, and prototyping, the 41-component clasp enhances both security and everyday comfort. After releasing the lift-up safety cover, a simple push unclips the clasp seamlessly. A secondary cover allows the wearer to fine-tune the micro-adjustment mechanism to a 10mm extension range in 2.5mm increments without removing the watch.
While the Chronomaster Solo Sport is a natural outlier among its chronograph siblings, Zenith ensured that rhythm, precision and everyday wearability remain at its forefront while preserving the spirit of one of horology’s most celebrated calibres.
