This collaboration is certainly a coup for Converse whose previous collaborations with Comme des Garcons PLAY and Missoni have all been successful. They hope to repeat this success with a collaboration with Maison Martin Margiela. Margiela has been known for its veil and mystery in the past, but since its acquisition by Only The

Brave (part of the Diesel conglomerate founded by Italian businessman Renzo Rosso) in 2002 and consequent departure of its founding designer in 2009, the brand has adopted a more open policy. Its recent surge of visibility has left many of its fervent fans wondering if it has abandoned all of its founding principles. The sole result of this collaboration is on a classic pair of Converses. Men’s Folio contacted the Maison via email to get to the bottom of it all.

MEN’S FOLIO: Maison Martin Margiela has been known to be rather secretive and mysterious. However, we have witnessed a spree of collaborations lately: H&M, Casio and now Converse. Why now?

MMM: Today, Maison Martin Margiela is a more established fashion house, and so more inclined and ready to share their influence in new and collaborative ways. Despite their mysterious exterior, Maison Martin Margiela has always believed in democratic fashion and values, and so relishes the idea of communicating and teaching a new type of audience about one of their cornerstone ideals.
