Back in the day, a new iPhone release meant exactly that: minor refinements to a familiar design, a faster chip, a sharper camera. Simple, predictable — and for years, that was enough. Until now. With the launch of its 17th generation, the iPhone 17 series, Apple has delivered a change that’s impossible to ignore.
The first headline is the iPhone Air. Positioned in place of the Plus, it arrives as the thinnest iPhone Apple has ever made, measuring just 5.6 mm — slimmer even than Samsung’s Galaxy S25 Edge. That slimness makes it strikingly light too, shaving 24 grams off its predecessor, all while packing in a 6.5-inch display. To ensure the design doesn’t sacrifice durability, Apple has used a titanium frame with its new Ceramic Shield 2 on the front, promising three times better scratch resistance and four times better drop protection. Still, compromises appear: the Air opts for a single rear camera in a new horizontal bump, foregoing an ultrawide option in the pursuit of thinness.
The iPhone Air also debuts a few firsts: Apple’s C1X modem, limited to sub-6 5G; a new N1 networking chip with Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread support; and a high-density battery that Apple claims still delivers 27 hours of video playback. The A19 Pro chip powers it all, paired with ProMotion 120 Hz and Qi2 wireless charging. It’s a futuristic silhouette in black, white, light gold and light blue — but one designed with very particular trade-offs.
At the other end of the spectrum sits the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max. Here, Apple leans into raw power, starting with a redesigned “Camera Plateau” — a horizontal strip housing a new 48-megapixel telephoto sensor alongside the ultra-wide and main cameras. The result is an 8x optical-like zoom, 40x digital zoom, and the promise of more detailed photography.
Pro models also gain vapour-chamber cooling, bringing Apple in line with Android rivals, and an expanded creative suite with ProRes RAW and Genlock support. Inside, an enhanced A19 Pro chip with an extra GPU core drives performance, with storage now starting at 256 GB. And on the outside, the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max will be available in three new finishes: cosmic orange, deep blue, and silver.
Taken together, the iPhone line-up is split between two futures: the Air, chasing impossibly thin minimalism, and the Pro, flexing professional-grade performance. In a landscape where phones have felt predictable for years, Apple is finally forcing the conversation on phones again. Coupled with its fixed-price scheme despite Trump’s tariffs, perhaps it’s time for that upgrade you’ve been waiting on.
