The Panerai Submersible Quarantaquattro Marks a New Chapter for Panerai

Panerai Debuts the Submersible QuarantaQuattroOne of the big news filtering out from Panerai at Watches & Wonders 2022 this year is the release of the Panerai Submersible QuarantaQuattro. QuarantaQuattro, otherwise known as 44 in English, is a nod to the Submersible’s new 44mm case diameter. The 44mm variant continues the narrative of Panerai refreshing the dimensions of its collections, having already done so with the release of the Panerai Luminor Marina Quaranta late last year.

Historically speaking, size does matter to the guys at Panerai. As you flip through archive records, a common theme runs throughout — the watches are unabashedly large as historical references range from 47mm to 58mm in diameter. Granted, those pieces were made to military specifications which warranted larger proportions as they were worn over various tactical gears and an extra dose of legibility is always a big welcome. Having moved away from military production, Panerai evolved their aesthetics over the years, tailored to suit the needs of pragmatic individuals. The 44mm case will become a cornerstone of the iconic collection of Submersible dive watches, joining existing 47mm and 42mm sizes.

Given its Submersible namesake, the Panerai Submersible QuarantaQuattro features all the essential hallmarks of Panerai’s dive collection which include a 300m water-resistance rating and unidirectional rotating bezel with metallic appliques filled with white Super-LumiNova. The patented crown-protecting device needs no further introduction as it is de rigueur in Panerai watches. One juicy news is the introduction of an improved date window that will be implemented throughout the Submersible collection for heightened legibility.

Panerai Debuts the Submersible QuarantaQuattroThree iterations of the Panerai Submersible QuarantaQuattro will inaugurate its arrival, the star being the Submersible QuarantaQuattro Carbotech Blu Abisso PAM01232. Carbotech is a carbon fibre composite that possesses remarkable strength while being lighter than titanium and is incredibly resistant to corrosion and scratches. It is the lightest case material used by Panerai and is distinguished by its inherent variegated black colouring.

The former features a black dial with blue accents and the latter is presented in a white dial with contrasting black highlights. Humming within the Submersible QuarantaQuattro is Panerai’s trusted P.900 calibre that features a seconds sub-dial at nine o’clock and supplies a whopping three-day power reserve. All pieces are accompanied by a rubber and fabric strap with a set of tools to allow interchangeability. Given Panerai’s commitment to preserving the environment with its Ecologico framework, the rubber and fabric straps will comprise 30% and 68% recycled materials respectively.
