#MFMF109: Deputy Editor Asaph’s New Found Love Playlist

  • By Asaph Low

MFMF was on hiatus for the last leg of 2021 and half of January but now we’re back! The team was on a crunch putting out the Dec/Jan issue and needed a break to recharge after. During that time, I’ve listened to artistes I don’t normally turn to and boy was that a jolt of refreshment — talk about new year new me..? Let’s see how long can this last. Here’s my New Found Loves playlist.

The Weeknd — Out of time & Here We Go… Again

Remember the tweet Adele made after Spotify decided to remove the shuffle button as the default option when playing albums? These are two songs that profited as the seamless transition highlights the genius concept The Weeknd so carefully weaved into his latest album Dawn FM. Set within the transmitted frequency of a fictional radio station 103.5 Dawn FM, the album feels equally good whether you’re on a late night drive to nowhere or just chilling in your bedroom.

Mac Miller — The Spins

I’ve a confession to make, I only started listening to Mac Miller earlier this year thanks to The Spins. His music just didn’t cross my streaming path until it was randomly slotted into my Spotify music queue (when you finish listening to a song/album and don’t have the repeat button turned on) one fine day. Rapping to the chorus of Empire of the Sun’s “Half Mast” was an introduction to the rest of his other musical works which I’ve gleefully lapped up since then. Thank you for your music, rest in peace.

REZZ & deadmau5 — Hypnocurrency

I like a good zone out tune and I found one recently. From my research, Hpynocurrency is noted as “the long-awaited first-ever collaboration between REZZ and deadmau5” and it’s elevated to such dazzling heights. One review reads, “It’s like the NBA All-Star Game or a primetime special with the casts of your two favorite TV shows, only better.” It works for me, not sure if it does for you.

Bonus YouTube Finds — Everlong Live at The Forum, Los Angeles

Not sure if you were aware that 11 year old Nandi Bushell challenged Dave Grohl to a series of drum-off challenges last year. Dave Grohl responded and after a few back and forths, Nandi was invited to play for the Foo Fighters at The Forum. Dave has a history of playing with unknowns from the crowd (Kiss Guy comes to mind) and in Dave’s own words, Nandi is one of the best ever. You be the judge.

Bonus YouTube Finds — Game of Thrones Theme Song at Fender Custom Shop

This sounds geeky but it’s one of those YouTube algorithm recommendations that pop up. The saving grace is having some of the most influential guitarists (Tom Morello of Audioslave/Rage Against The Machine, Scott Ian of Anthrax, Nuno Bettencourt of Extreme and Brad Paisley) play the Game of Thrones Theme Song. This is true content.
