The Healing Power of Crystals According to Crystal Light
“Surrounding myself with the right one helps to calm me down. However, the crystals choose you as opposed to you choosing it. For example, I always gravitate towards Brazilian Citrine. I’m an emotional person and it has strong grounding energy,” shares Jeff Chang, the founder of Crystal Light. While the statement might seem new-age or perhaps, a little too hippy-dippy, it can be debated that there is some scientific evidence to the healing powers of crystals and what they are able to do for one’s mental wellbeing.

Some scientists (a more popular one would be Albert Einstein) have theorised that any form of matter comprises 99.99% empty space but what exactly makes up this empty space? Energy. The person who is reading this, the chair he is sitting on and the medium of which he is reading this story on — they are all vibrating energy.

However, just like everything else that can be quantified as matter, each inanimate object or living creature has their own vibrational frequency. That is perhaps where the concept of “new age” healing comes in. It is believed in certain circles that higher vibrations in humans lead them to radiate kindness, love and peace whereas lower vibrations incite anxiety, anger and fear.

How then did this theory of the healing power of crystals — or some might call it “pretty rocks” — rise to become a trend? From a scientific context, crystals are made of a fixed geometric pattern of molecules. In a new age context, crystals have a stable energy frequency that grounds a human, akin to rebalancing his vibrational frequency from things that might throw it off like the “bad vibes” of others, mentally-draining news and unwanted visual stimuli.

Chang believes that purchasing one is simply the first step to unlocking the healing power of crystals, “People [tend to] buy crystals as it is. They don’t set intentions that help to manifest the crystal’s energy. After cleansing it, I recommend holding it and telling it what you want it to help you achieve. Setting intentions should be done every month — it can range from achieving self-love, being financially successful or having a peace of mind.”

This concept of crystal healing — some sceptics call it a pseudoscientific alternative medicine technique — dates back to between 4500BC to 2000 BC where the Ancient Sumerians (the earliest known civilisation in the historical region of southern Mesopotamia) were documented using crystals in magical formulas. Oddly enough, the problems the Ancient Sumerians faced echoed modern ones — they were used to ward off bad luck or “heal” from unlucky incidents, while some were even used to calm hysteria.

Chang echoes the same sentiment, “Black coloured crystals like Tourmaline or Shungite ward off negative energy, such as the bad thoughts of people around you. I even recommend carrying one in your pocket when you attend a funeral. However, other kinds of crystals to consider are ones that keep you in a relaxed state; considering what is happening in the world right now. Crystals like Aquamarine and Kyanite are grounding ones, they help you to communicate clearly and the vibrational energy of both help you to remain focused — even in stressful situations.”

“If one however, is looking for the perfect pairing, I would recommend Amethyst and Rose Quartz as this combination unblocks energy chakras (the former links to the crown chakra, the most powerful chakra that affects one’s mental state and the latter links to the heart chakra that affects relationships with people and oneself in a love context) that do not make you feel good. Think of it as a lympathic drainage of the chakras. If one has difficulty resonating with either, I recommend Fluorite as it cleanses all seven. I would go even further to recommend one to wear it as jewellery to keep it constantly near his body.”

What about the yellow crystals that adorns many a Chinese businessman’s office then? It has a name — Citrine. “It’s a crystal that provides abundant wealth. Interestingly though, in a meditative context, it helps your solar plexus chakra located in your stomach to help ward off illnesses. Hold it to your stomach when you have a flu and meditate while imagining a healing yellow aura around you.”

While it is easy to simply dismiss this story about the healing power of crystals as — for a lack of a better phrase “mumbo jumbo” — take the concept of crystal healing as one that induces a pleasant effect to help one find an excuse or heal from a traumatic experience. If all else fails, crystals do make for great adornments.
