#MFMF18 All The Feels

  • By Khoo Yong Hao

The human emotion is an enigma. It can compel you to overcome hurdles; at the same time, it can spiral you into depths of nothingness. It can also spur artists to pick up a pen and compose the next chart-topper, and when that happens, a heartfelt message is sent out to a sea of chanting fans worldwide. With every verse comes wave after wave of pure emotion, and for this week’s edition of #MFMF, brace yourself for a tsunami of feels.

Beck / Loser

Yong Hao: If you find yourself in a self-induced plight that sounds absolutely stupid on paper but somehow even more ludicrous in action one too many times, then let Beck’s nonsensical single be the soundtrack to your next fiasco. The song is literally stupid catchy with its incoherent lyrics and at the end of it all, you’ll concur with its chorus of “I’m a loser baby so why don’t you kill me?” for sitting through the four minutes of absolute gibberish.

Gumb0 / Snow

Marcus: Long-distance relationships suck because feelings of intimacy become confined to text messages and Skype calls during odd timings. Nevertheless, there is something especially romantic and pure when both parties fall asleep in front of their laptops, counting the hours before texting “Good morning” to each other. The unexplored feelings and emotions then accumulate and explode in pure ecstasy when both parties finally meet. This song encapsulates that feeling perfectly.

IAMX / Alive In New Light

Wei Jian: On its own, Chris Corner’s soaring anthem on personal introspection and self-redemption effectively dispels darkness (the singer has battled and overcome depression). But when put in the context of the devastating baby-stealing scene in HTGAWM, all hopes are dashed as his uplifting peals become cries of desperation and despair. It speaks to the emotive power of the song when it can turnabout between both extremes so easily.

Mac Miller / Dunno (Recorded at Spotify Studios NYC)

Jeremy: Before his tragic passing, 26 year-old Pittsburgh native Mac Miller recorded a pared-down version of his own track “Dunno” for Spotify Studios, transforming the atmospheric tune into a heart-wrenching acoustic rendition. The posthumous release hits right in the feels to melt even the coldest of hearts, as Miller had seemingly dedicated this number to his ex, Ariana Grande.
