Where to go for creative Chinese New Year-inspired food and drinks?

  • By Shelton Chang

Tired of the same old usual hotpots and what-nots? Here are some interesting places serving up not-your-usual Chinese New Year fares.

Nutmeg and Clove

Nutmeg and Clove is a Singapore-themed cocktail bar that is nestled on Ann Siang Road, serving up delicious (and potent) Singaporean concoctions and bar bites. The bar’s interior and menu bring patrons on a road trip down Singaporean history, from the colonial times to the modern metropolis we are today.

This Chinese New Year, Nutmeg and Clove had come up with three Lunar New Year-inspired cocktails, namely: The Huat Ah! cocktail, a Campari-based, low alcoholic level tipple, captures the sweetness of the Mandarin Orange. The Prosperity Flip made with Bacardi Carta Blanca, that tastes like liquid pineapple tarts. And lastly, the Chinatown cocktail, is a mix of Kim Joo Guan Bak Kwa infused Bulleit Bourbon and perfectly balanced by a blend of Sweet Vermouth and Shao Xing wine.

Other honorable mentions include the Tsukiji Fizz which is a fishy reinterpretation of the Ramos Gin Fizz, with squid ink and hints of umami. If you’re on board the salted egg train, their Salted Egg Chicken Wing is an excellent side dish along with the cocktails.

Potato Head Folk

Potato Head Folk has created a Lucky Ducky special burger for Chinese New Year. The Lucky Ducky is a play on duck pancakes and features spiced 120g white Pekin duck patty, cucumber, scallions, hoisin, pickled daikon, chili, barbecue sauce, ginger mayonnaise and crushed tater tots in a toasted rice bun.

Swiss Butchery

Preparing reunion dinners can be quite a hassle. While we are indulging in the copious amounts of food and drinks, we tend to forget the stressful preparation process one has to go through in order to literally put food on the table. Swiss Butchery comes up with fresh and high-quality selection of cuts of meats and seafood sets for a steamboat/bbq party. From Flank steaks to Wagyu ribeye, the Hot Pot Beef Galore would be your best option.

They also have a delectable selection of roasts such as Sweet Miso Roast Pork, Char Siew Roast Pork Ribs and Beer Roasted Pork Belly. This Chinese New Year, Swiss Butchery comes up with Mini Golden Purses, golden puff pastries stuffed with meat in the shape of a purse to bring in prosperity and wealth. It also comes with larger portions for a single meal. The Butchery also has a galore of various yusheng, desserts and gift hampers for every CNY need.

Best of all, there are delivery options if orders are above $200. All at the comfort of your own home.
