When BMW introduced its X5 model back in 1999, it was the advent of a whole new generation of vehicles featuring the German automobile manufacturer’s game changing xDrive technology. For the uninitiated, the BMW xDrive is an intelligent all-wheel drive system that constantly monitors the driving situation and distributes power smoothly between the axles to ensure the best possible traction at all times. This allows the driver to enjoy an amazing amount of safety and agility while taking a corner at speed.
As the car’s being driven, xDrive technology even “thinks” a step ahead. The system analyses data such as speed, steering angle, torque output and other key factors, from the on-board electronics systems and calculates the best way to move to do away with any oversteer or understeer. Moreover, under extreme conditions, the BMW xDrive can automatically direct up to 100 percent of its drive forces to wheels with grip, either at the front or rear axle, enabling the driver to start up effortlessly even on slippery surfaces or steep hills.
To showcase the xDrive’s impressive capabilities, BMW Asia recently hosted an exclusive event, from March 13 – 16, at Singapore’s tropical Lazarus Island. The event transformed the island into a dedicated test-drive circuit that allowed participants to experience the superiority of the BMW X models (like the high-performance BMW X6 M, as well as the tri-turbo diesel-powered BMW X6 M50d) in a safe, yet exciting off-road environment. The circuit was designed with simulated obstacles, including a segment with off-road terrain that gave city drivers an experience that they will would not have otherwise been able to encounter during normal driving in Singapore.

The BMW xDrive is one of the most advanced all-wheel drive systems found in the industry today,” said Corporate Affairs Director of BMW Group Asia, Sethipong Anutarasoti.
