Bolt from the Blue: Ben Affleck at 70th Annual Golden Globes

His hunt for good will is finally over, it seems: Ben Affleck has well and truly earned his dues, winning big at this year’s Golden Globes on-stage as well as on the style scoreboard. The Golden Boy of the night scooped up two globes for Best Director and Best Picture for his breakthrough thriller “Argo”—and his ensemble was every bit as thrilling in its handsome sophistication.

In a refreshing throwback to the halcyon days when formal wear was de rigueur, Ben was buttoned up in a Gucci custom peak lapel three-piece tuxe in a deep, rich sapphire—the color of the night for the gents, it seems. He wore his stunner of a jacket over a well-pressed white dress shirt and a matching blue satin bowtie, letting the masculine swank of his suit take center-stage by pairing it with subdued black leather lace-ups. (Aside: we absolutely adore the grosgrain trim running down his fitted pants, which adds so much to the outfit without being obnoxious.)

Three-piece suited men are rare birds on the red carpet—pubescent millionaires are much more likely to be seen smirking for the photogs in tees and sneakers—so Ben Affleck’s bolt of blue smartness was a nice reprieve from the louche vibe of the noughties. We even dig his meticulously manicured facial hair: so dashing in a older-man way. Like the all-round good guy he appears to be, even his acceptance speech was aw-shucks touching: “I want to thank my three kids. Love you guys. And I want to thank my wife, who is the reason I’m standing here. You’re my everything.” There you go: a Hollywood hunk that has aged as well as the proverbial wine men are supposed to. Bravo!
