Away, Father Time! Baby New Year Romeo Beckham’s in the House

  • By Men's Folio

Romeo is going to break many a Juliet’s heart in time to come but for now, seeing him mucking about in boyish glee for Burberry’s Spring 2013 campaign is just sheer fantasy, transporting us back to our Eton days when we were wrapped in taupe trenches and armed with designer check brollies before being chauffeured off to school…except, of course, our surname isn’t Beckham and our Mum doesn’t have a closet full of vintage croc Kellys. C’est la vie…still, we have to hand it to Chris Bailey for tapping the adorable middle son of the Beckhams for Burberry’s latest string of print and digital ads, in which big fashion names Eddie Campbell, Cara Delevingne and Max Rendell play skinny second fiddle to the precocious 10-year-old.

Lensed by frequent collaborator Mario Testino, this is Romeo’s first-ever modeling gig, though you won’t be able to tell from his charismatic grins and artfully petulant poses for the camera—a refreshing departure from the fashion world’s creepy tendency to sexualize kids…

We were expecting to hear juicy murmurings of Posh Spice-like tantrums on set, but the youngest addition to Burberry’s posse of supermodels was apparently a breeze to work with: “Romeo was a joy to work with and really stole the show,” Bailey said. “We had such fun shooting the campaign and I think that comes through in the images, which really reflect the upbeat spirit of the collection.”

Look out for the budding hearthrob in upcoming shots of him in some of our favourite pieces from the Spring collection: we particularly dig the image of him in a purple Prorsum metallic trench, tugging at the stick-thin arm of a non-plussed Edie Campbell. Romeo Beckham as the new Burberry boy—welcome to 2013’s new-found child-like optimism!
