Margiela Martin Margiela Alexis Mabille Bestowed Couture Status

Maison Martin Margiela Spring 2013 RTW Menswear

Félicitations, Maison Martin Margiela and Alexis Mabille: both fashion houses have now been appellated with the venerable label of “haute couture” by The Commission de Classement Couture Création in Paris. This marks the houses’ official induction into rarefied world of couture.

According to the Commission, couture status is bestowed depending on the candidate house’s number of looks shown; the size of the atelier; the standard of bespoke and handmade pieces; and whether the label in question shows at least two collections a year. Alexis Mabille has been showing couture collections since 2008, while Margiela made its debut “haute” line this July.

In an indication, perhaps, of the growing recognition of the prestige of keeping the flames of a once moribund art form alight, other high-profile houses have also launched couture collections in recent years, such as Dolce & Gabbana, which showcased its Alta Moda line in July this year.
