Alexander Wang Replaces Nicolas Ghesquire As Balenciagas Creative Director

Alexander Wang

After months of feverish speculation from fashion insiders, it’s finally been made official: Alexander Wang has been tapped as the new creative director for Balenciaga.

The New York-based Wang will replace Nicolas Ghesquière, who leaves behind a hugely successful 15-year legacy at the helm of the PPR-owned house which has now become synonymous with its sleek pret-a-porter and, of course, its covetable range of Motorcycle distressed leather bags.

The confirmation of Wang’s appointment will put to rest recent rumours that Scottish designer Christopher Kane was in the running for the position, murmurings which have now been squashed by Kane’s reps.

Here’s a quick 101 on Balenciaga’s newly minted creative head honcho: Alexander Wang graduated from New York‘s Parsons School of Design in 2005 and, following an internship at Teen Vogue, began designing for his eponymous label, with the designer’s first ready-to-wear collection being launched in 2007. The 28-year-old is noted in the fashion circle for his androgynous aesthetic and offbeat women’s accessories—we particularly adore his Prisma bags and hexagonal Emile totes.

We’re waiting with bated breath to see what the burgeoning superstar will bring to the table with his high-profile position at Balenciaga. In the meantime, good luck, Wang!
