Shanghai Tang Spring/Summer 2017: Shades of Cool

  • By Ian Lee

If there was ever a promise for Chinois-inspired looks that are surprisingly minimal, modern and cool, the Shanghai Tang Spring/Summer 2017 collection makes and keeps it. Its blousons, shirts and jackets are all crisp lines, luxe fabrics and fresh athleisure and tennis-inspired details. Take the new Neo Tang Jacket, for instance. Like its name suggests, it’s a Tang jacket given a twist: with a cropped length and snug fit, and fused with Western buttons.

Besides the requisite options with the label’s iconic mandarin collar, there are also more relaxed styles like lapel-less blazers and collarless bombers and blousons. The brand’s trademark Oriental details have also been redefined, and made more subtle and wearable – geometric lattice patterns find their way on knits and frog button knots appear on sporty blousons (the buttons are more decorative than functional, because the jackets open with modern zip pulls). Also adding to Shanghai Tang’s refreshing new ease: the relaxed trouser styles like jogger silhouettes styled with youthful white court sneakers.
