Diesel Pre-Spring 2017 Collection: Streetwear Goes Latin

  • By Ian Lee

Intense reds, the star motif and loads of ruffles – for its Pre-Spring 2017 collection, Diesel turns to Latin culture, and channels all its passion, energy and love of life. “We’ve been inspired by dressing up, dancing and letting loose; the sun bleached colours of historic architecture and the iconic star symbol. We are curious and get excited by different cultures around the world. A global spirit has been part of the Diesel DNA since the very beginning,” explains the label’s artistic director Nicola Formichetti. And in case you find that the heavily fringed leather jacket looks a tad familiar, that’s because Lady Gaga (frequent Formichetti collaborator) has worn a few similar custom pieces for the promotional blitz of her latest single Million Reasons

But back to the collection: it contrasts the drama of Latin-inspired details with the youthful sports and street wear codes that you’ve come to expect from the edgy brand. Burgundy is a key hue in the range – appearing on shawl lapel tuxedo blazers (made rebelliously cool with black denim, because this is Diesel after all), dressy tracksuits, and ruffled shirts. In the prints department, matchstick motifs on shirts are a cheeky nod to cigar culture. Star symbols, large and small, are boldly patched or embroidered on Diesel’s motorcycle and souvenir jackets. To “bridge the gap between day and night dressing”, Diesel’s most famous product, denim, gets the royal indigo treatment. And because we all need a break from stuffy pencil-skinny jeans, the collection offers cool, cropped straight-leg options.
