We wouldn’t mind one of these dotted designer trophies displayed on our mantelpiece: come February 20, the Brit Awards will be doling out these Damien Hirst beauties to pop music’s best.
Hirst is only the third artist to give the coveted music prize a makeover, following fashion designer Vivienne Westwood in 2010 and pop artist Sir Peter Blake in 2011.
The artist – who has long courted “is it art?” controversy with his oeuvre of morbid skull and preserved dead animals – decided to play it safe this time, splashing the trophies with his iconic spots. “I am honoured to be asked to design this year’s statue,” said Hirst. “It has become such an iconic award, I love the Brits.”
Meanwhile, Brit chairman David Joseph had this to say about this year’s collaboration: “Damien is truly one of the most important British artists and his re-imagining of the statue will make winning a 2013 Brit an even more special proposition.” Amen to that. More to the point: what will the stars be wearing come February? Might Adele finally get over her obsession with dour black dresses to don a playful outfit befitting the trophies she will no doubt be receiving? Will the sky fall and will pigs fly?
