Men’s Folio Grooming Awards 2022: Best Skin Soothing Serum rationale #1 the serum
Frankly, the Men’s Folio Grooming Awards 2022 has not changed much since its inauguration in 2020. Its metrics are still yardsticks that have not shrunk in length — does a product feel and work as they claim to do besides looking good on the table? If we are to play spot the difference, then there are smarter upgrades to the daily staples we use such as serums for the eyes, a greater focus on makeup removal, hydration, and many new solutions to scent oneself.

There are, of course, even more choices this year — roughly 528 nominations were made across 80 brands. We narrowed it down to 286 products from 68 brands, of which were tested by this panel of eight — Managing Editor Asaph Low, Deputy Editor Bryan Goh, Makeup Artists Eric TanLarry YeoPriscelia WongSha Shamsi, and grooming enthusiasts Smita de Souza and Aiman Haikal — resulting in 68 winners that were deeply vetted, tested, and of course, loved.

Here, the best skin soothing serum award winner: the RATIONALE #1 The Serum available at their Singapore flagship stores (Raffles City Shopping Centre or TANGS at Tangs Plaza) or online at http://sg.rationale.com.

The rationale of RATIONALE Skincare is straightforward: whatever ingredient is incorporated into a skincare formula has to be recognised by the skin as it produces it too. This clear-cut dermatological and cosmetic science incorporated consensus is applied in every product produced by the Australian brand of which are six collections, meaning there is no second-guessing when it comes to the efficacy or efficiency of the products. They are once again, in a straightforward manner of speaking, engineered to work.

Skin sensitivity, however, is a contentious subject. One can simply ask himself about the root cause of it. Is he not hydrating his skin enough or has he excessively exposed himself to environmental factors like the sun, wind, or excessive cold? Could it even be an unfortunate drawing of the genetics cards: eczema, rosacea, or psoriasis? The brilliance of the RATIONALE #1 The Serum then (interestingly, it might remind one of the zesty oranges flavoured Capri-Sun), as we mentioned above and based on its winning title, is that its formula contains ingredients that soothe sensitivity itself.

Like any of the products in each of the six collections, the ingredients used in the serum are already ones that our skin naturally produces, needs or as time goes by, becomes deficient in. Ceramides strengthen the skin barrier and keeps the skin hydrated and a combination of collagen amino acids keep the epidermis of the skin happy and hydrated. Vitamin B3 (also known as niacinamide) increases the synthesis of ceramide to strengthen the skin barrier while evening out skin tone.

One might get a glow with disciplined and repeated usage as founder Richard Parker calls it “The RATIONALE Glow” and is the prime example of it. The serum contains ascorbic glucoside, a derivative of vitamin C that converts into the vitamin itself once absorbed into the dermis. Think of it as a serum to calm the skin or hydrate it; a soother for post-non-invasive aesthetic procedures or even a solution for if one gets too avid with his acids. All said situations dissipate the minute the serum’s cooling formula gets applied. Just a small word of advice, just one to two drops is needed for optimal results.

RATIONALE #1 The Serum is priced at $191 for a 30ml bottle and is available for purchase at their Singapore flagship stores (Raffles City Shopping Centre or TANGS at Tangs Plaza) or online at sg.rationale.com.
