What does it mean to be a multi-hyphenate man in today’s context? Technically speaking, we are all already one: sons, brothers, lovers, enemies, and oscillating between the roles we play in life. However, what does it mean to be a multi-hyphenate man of tomorrow? The answer can be found within the inner and outer world of Alfred Sim.

A father, singer, business owner, athlete trainer, and more, Sim is concrete proof that the nexus of a man’s multiverse burns white-hot with success only if he puts his heart, mind, and soul to it. Here, he talks about his past, present, and future.

Hi Alfred, how’s it going?
I’m feeling great! Never felt so busy before! Haha!

Father, singer, business owner, athlete trainer, and more: when do you think the “real” Alfred Sim emerges?
I actually categorised myself into two main areas: entertainment and sports! And I think each compliments one another!

Since your debut around 2005, how do you think your “aesthetic” as a singer has changed? What do you think has been the biggest change for you?
It should be 2015! I don’t think I’ve changed much in terms of the way I present myself when I perform on stage. But I think I’m not as lean as before, and definitely qualify as having a ‘Dad Bod” now!

Looking back at your first EP in 2016, what do you think of it today? What are perhaps some things you would keep or like to change?
I’d love to be as lean as before, and hope to spend some time for myself, work out, and do sports!

With regards to your performance for Rebirth 2022, how did it feel to perform again? What do you think has been the biggest lesson from this performance?
To be honest, I felt really comfortable performing on stage and especially together with my wife, Kewei. I was enjoying myself on stage being myself. However, everyone has an “idol” in their heart and you’ll tend to be influenced by the way the idols present themselves.

I was a victim as well when I was trying to impersonate my favourite pop star. However, I knew I had to be myself and after “ReBirth 2022”, I felt very confident and I think people accept “Alfred Sim” as who he is.

For Reactiv, what is the simplest way you’d explain what you do?
Reactiv is an Athletics training club that focuses on sprints and hurdles training.

What do you think you do differently with regards to other sports/athletic performance companies?
I think the coach and athlete relationship is very important. These athletes who are training seriously have to trust you to take care of their sporting careers. It’s important to have a good rapport with the team, listen to the athletes, and not simply give them coaching instructions as one-way communication.

Having trained the likes of Calvin Kang and Shalindran Sathiyanesan, how do you think youth athletes fare in a 2022 context? Do they have different physical and emotional needs?
I have experienced an interesting change comparing athletes of 2022 versus athletes of Calvin and Shalindran’s era. I consider myself younger then and I trained together and coached these athletes to the SEA Games in 2007. We had a very strong bond then and till now, we are still friends!

I would say athletes nowadays in general are less active in comparison, therefore fitness and strength wise, I would say there’s some significant difference in my observation.

Do you perhaps, have a motivational quote you came up with on your own?
I don’t really have a quote per se, but I always like to remind my athletes that they are only young once and should take this opportunity to fully unleash their potential and see how much they can achieve!

#MensFolioMeets Alfred Sim, the Multi-Hyphenate Man of TomorrowWhat exactly is EXERGAME 4D?
EXERGAME 4D is a systematic and professionally enhanced group workout platform that provides strong immersion and interaction using projection mapping and motion sensing.

Do you think that perhaps, it can ever replace the need for fitness coaches?
I don’t think it can replace the need for fitness coaches. Exergame4d is a coach-centric program where our coaches have to be knowledgeable, creative, and sharp to educate, correct the form and provide alternative options for participants.

What is the take-up then? How do experienced gym-goers enjoy it and what about first-timers?
I would say currently the EXERGAME4D attracts all demographics because it’s very new in the market. From amateurs to seasoned fitness enthusiasts, we have people of a wide range of fitness levels signing up to experience it firsthand.

We are currently releasing more basic and beginner-level exercise programs for this “exposure” period. The Exergame4d system caters to a good progression of programs from beginner to advance levels and more intense workouts like power lifting. We have very good feedback and our customers find it interesting and refreshing.

How accurate is its progress tracking? And most importantly, what is the most common feedback towards it?
All clients have to download the EXERGAME4D app to have the full personalised experience from booking classes, scheduling them, and tracking past workout stats and records.

What do you see yourself doing, let’s say, for the latter half of the year? Are there any things you’d hope to accomplish?
I hope to expand the business of EXERGAME4D in Singapore and we are open to collaborations and partnerships. For fitness business owners out there who are interested in EXERGAME4D please contact us for a chat! Haha!

I usually also like to ask this to people I’m interviewing for the first time: what is the #1 song that was most played on your Spotify last year?
I did a search and it was my own song 从没想过!
