The Mattifying Pressed Powder is Back and Smoother Than Ever

  • By Bryan Goh

Just the other day, a PR girl pitched me a “mattifying pressed powder” and I thought, seriously? What era are we living in? I’m open to all forms of beauty and the products that helps one express said beauty but I have an odd convinction about mattifying pressed powders. You know, the early 2000’s product that nobody around me seemed to get right — it always made them look like they dunked their entire face in the pan.

But what did said PR girl know that I didn’t? It’s that we’re living in the big 20 of 21 where the mattifying pressed powder has come back into trend. They’re no longer intensely drying or fake looking and in fact, these ones that have landed on my table are pretty damn good. They banish shine and imperfectations faster than you can say, “Dude, I look like I had eight hours of sleep.”

Pictured Above: The Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Powder Foundation was said product I was pitched and I’m glad I said yes. It’s hard to not find your shade (urh hello, it has 50) and it’s sweat and water resistant. Not recommended to wear to the gym but anywhere else is fine: application will take you 10 seconds or less.

Infused with the hydrating properties of hyaluronic acid, the By Terry Hyaluronic Pressed Powder mattifies without any dryness. And in fact, it washes off cleanly with a foam cleanser without the need for double cleansing (that’s another story for another day).

The science of this mattifying pressed powder (also known as the Shiseido Synchro Skin Invisible Silk Pressed Powder) is called the Responsive Sensory Technology: one that reacts to how your skin looks and feels during the day. The hotter you get, the most sweatproof it comes. The sweatier you become, the more resistant it gets.

The Diorskin Forever Compact Foundation gives you an extra matte finish (like you have an inhuman resistance to humidity) that becomes more permanent as you wear it: it has an “poreless effect” skincare essence to perfect what you already have.

A one shade fits all mattifying pressed powder: the NARS Light Reflecting Pressed Setting Powder has photochromatic technology that adjusts to all sources of light (UV, check. Fluorescent, check. Sunlight, even better) to ensure that your skin looks like you happily and competently edited it on photoshop.

Some say powder foundation, we say mattifying pressed powder that looks like we airbrushed ourselves: the  Givenchy Matissime Velvet Compact Radiant Mat Powder Foundation SPF 20-PA+++ wears well 16 hours in. Though we don’t know why you’d wear it for so long.

If you’ve put this mattifying pressed powder and started sweating, dont’t be alarmed. There’s some nifty tech in the Shu Uemura Stage Performer Invisible Powder that abosrbs water and oil without drying your skin out.
