Travel Light for Your Vacation

  • By Men's Folio

The upcoming holiday season is looming, the packing list has not been made, but nerves have already started to unravel. Any semblance of a stress-free vacation seems to have flown out the window.

Unless one is a “wanderlust influencer” or just an “influencer”, coordination of outfits should be fairly straightforward. The right amount of clothes coupled with climate-appropriateness and a pair of comfortable walking shoes are what most of us need. With that out of the way, the toiletries kit comes into focus as the next big issue.

Due to air travel restrictions, one cannot simply pack his usual at-home grooming products for his travels; pouring viscous liquids into 100ml (or less) containers can be a chore. Of course, hotels commonly provide toiletries, but what if one hates the scent, or worse, suffer skin allergies after using them? There are so many considerations. In this article, one will see that packing a toiletries kit can be a non-issue and he does not need to feel too detached from the familiarity of home.

The first step is to identify the basics by separating wants from needs. We need the three-step skincare routine of cleanse, tone, and moisturise, and we also need shampoo, body cleanser, and deodorant. As hygiene and a well-groomed face are essential, these necessities warrant the hassle of transferring the liquids into travel-friendly bottles.

The climate of the destination must also be considered when deciding if additional skincare products are needed. Either for a beach vacation or a tour of Rome in fall, sunblock is crucial for blocking out harmful UV rays. Moreover, as the skin is not attuned to the rays, it gets out of sync and goes into breakout mode. When dealing with cold and dry weather, super-hydrating skincare products would be indispensable; it could be a hydrating serum to apply before the moisturiser or an overnight hydrating mask to apply before sleep to boost skin moisture levels. Dry, cracked skin can be painful, and prevention is better than cure in this case.

What men can consider forgoing is shaving; growing a holiday beard can be sexy. However, if you are travelling for work, pack a compact battery-operated shaver or use your facial cleanser as shaving foam. The latter overcomes the impossible task of transferring shaving foam or finding the travel size of your favourite shaving foam. Even though weekly exfoliation and facial masking are good habits that promote healthy-looking skin, these can take a break as the man takes a vacation too.

Anything outside of the above is absolutely unnecessary. Nail clippers, tweezers, and eyebrow trimmers are accessories that one should not even remotely think of bringing. All primping should have been carried out before the trip to avoid any extra baggage.

The next step is to choose multi-purpose grooming products. Like the previously mentioned facial cleanser that doubles up as a shaving foam, your moisturiser can also be a sunblock, just pick one with an SPF of at least 30. An all-over shampoo for a thorough head-to-toe wash is also a great idea.

Pack your toiletries kit with the above tips in mind, and you will be ready for a stress-free vacation. It will get easier with every trip, as you will narrow down the things that are truly essential to you. Do not worry about forgetting to bring something, because a cheap alternative can always be purchased at the destination. Moreover, if one has forgotten the item in the first place, it just proves its redundancy; one merely has to live without it for ten days or so.
